Not trying to argue ...
I'd like to know more on HOW they achieved this cool effect - I happen to love it and haven't heard other Amps re-create this sustainy sound. From what I've heard, It doesn't show up in any recordings on Youtube or elsewhere that I've thus far. It seems to come after the recorder... then again, I'm still waiting on headphones, they usually pick-up subtleties better. That said, being a cheap Fender Amp w/ tons of effects, etc ... I'd expect some sort of noise... but all-in-all, I find the Mustang incredibly quiet and tight sounding, unless you really open up the Gain, etc... then it grabs some unneeded frequencies .. but its still MUCH better then my Tube Amp which picks up baby monitors or something once in a while.

On a side-note:
If Fender does release a so-called patch ..please make it available as a third-party download and NOT absolute for ALL Mustang owners.

I'm glad you love it, but I love clean channels, and there is none. I returned it.

Well here's a clip to demonstrate the issue.

It's easier to notice with headphones

Recorded direct via USB in GarageBand.
Clean twin No effects, No reverb
Gain:4 Vol:8 Treble:5.5 Mid:7 Bass:7 Br switch:On

Occurs with many presets, if not all.

Again to me, it's not a problem. If I want clean, I use the real thing. In my case, a PRRI.
But a PRRI worth 7 to 8 mustang I and it does ONE thing.

Never a Mustang amp will give the tone quality you get with a real pro amp like a Twin, a DRRI or a PRRI or whatever. You always get what you paid for! For 100 bucks, OTOH the Mustang I give me more!

YMMV.

In mine the distortion is easily recorded by Audacity and I hear it with both headphones and the amp speaker.

It's not just the base strings either, as ya move from string 1 to 6 ya just hear it more. The file from stratquebec says it all.

With the Mustang set for clean tones it's best heard on single notes as they decay. It's obscured by dirty tones. Even so, on clean tones the faster ya play lead passages the muddier the tone becomes because of this distortion.

Perhaps why it's not heard in YouTube clips is because most all of them are not of clean tones. Even on those with clean tones you have to slow down, play single notes and listen to the decay of the note to hear it best ... and no clips I saw did that.

Perhaps I'm being hard on the Mustang but I can't ignore this fault just because it's inexpensive.

Overall I like the Mustang but the inability to do a good clean tone because of this distortion just sucks away all enthusiasm I might have had for the amp.

I'd like to hear a response from Fender regarding this problem.

I emailed them, have not heard back, and am curious if it is the speaker, the enclosure, a combination thereof, or if the DSP modeling causing it.

I emailed them as well.

Like I said ... I hear it from the speaker, headphones and I can record it. The last 2 rule out the speaker and enclosure.

I'm no expert but I think the distortion is probably some kind of digital artifact. Whether it's hardware or software I dunno ... but hope it's software.

Yep I think that's what I got too. I mostly notice it on bass note especially the Low E and A strings. Seems more pronounces at certain positions, like 5 -8 on Low E and maybe 3-6 on the A. Sometimes I even have it on the open low strings. Thought it was a busted speaker or buzzing sound.

Digital artefacts indeed. I hope too it's software. Would be interesting to know what DSP chips they use and see if others builders using the same, have encountered the same issue.

The clip I did is using the USB cable so it's a direct recording. No speaker and no enclosure involved.

I wonder if the other modeling amps like the G-DEC have this problem ...

Anyone have a G-DEC that has distortion of the type heard on the sound clip by stratquebec?

Guess I should have said I kind of ruled out the broke speak thing. I can crank the master volume all the way up to 10 and mute the strings with my hand and get a heavy "thud" sounds and no buzz or no rattle or no whatever you want to call it. So pretty sure the speaker is fine.

Not real scientific

Thanks Stratq,
I can hear it now ..but I still love it. Starts out crystal clear then ends with some fade-out distortion... But it still sounds even more-so natural to me then a clean/clean sound.

That nasty distortion still exist in Mustang III and for sure, in IV and V, models that's not inexpensive, like someone said somewhere. The distortion is like old and fatigued tubes but I like new and clean ones. If I want distortion I crank the gain pot or take an overdrive stompbox...
Thanks in advance Fender Team for the next firmware update. I believe you could do it!
