Hi Folks... middle aged dude learning new tricks with Mustang and an ukulele! My wife figures this kind of middle-age crazy is a lot better than me on a Harley with some strange woman! :)
Question: Where can I go to find out about the relationships between Gain, Volume and Master? They all pump up the sound but I know I'm missing some key info. Help?

Thanks.

Here's a starting suggestion...Master controls the overall volume of the preset. Gain and volume work together to vary the amount of overdrive/ dirty tone. If you want a clean sound start with a gain at about 3 and volume 8-10. If you want to dirty up the sound a bit, start increasing the gain and lower the volume until you get the tone (blend) you're looking for, then if the overall sound is too loud or soft, adjust the master. Hope this helps.

Most older Tube Amps came with Gain, Volume and Master.. I thought it was pretty nifty to see it on these Mustangs...

Gain = Sustain/Distortion
Volume = can be used like a Tone control with mild Distortion
Master = Overall Volume for every preset..the main volume control

Exactly what I was wanting to know too. I was trying to figure this out too as a new guitar player.

Hey Tvweatherguy, don't knock the Harley's till you try'em. I've been riding scoots all my life (since I was 14 and I'm -well less say over 50) and Harleys for a number of them year. Them "strange" women are great, especially if yours like to ride. :lol:

Thanks

Well . . .. not to be argumentative . . . but . .. . "older" which I guess is relative, tube amps first had Volume and a single tone control which was a "trebel cut" pot. Think Fender Champ.

Next came Volume and two tone stack i.e. Treble and Bass - both "cut" pots. Think Fender Deluxe.

Next came Volume and three tone stack i.e. Treble, Mid and Bass. Think Super Reberb, Bandmanster, Showmaster . . .. .. .

It was not until Marshall added a preamp "Gain" control in addition to the "Volume control that the "forced as opposted to natural" distortion sound was created. Think Marshall 900.

Fender picked up on this later in the game and started adding a Gain Control to meet the demands of the "newer" Rock sound.

This was all great but you still had to really CRANK UP the amps to get the Overdrive/Distortion sound you wanted. Thus, a Master Control was added to adjust the OVERALL volume output while still letting the pre-preamp (Gain) OD the preamp section (Volume).

So, spanning the past 50+ years of guitar amp design there was a natural progression to more gain and more control over the tone of the amp. We live in a great time for playing the type of music we love; no matter it be Jazz, country, Rock or that Metal thing. LOL

Blessings to all, Bo
