Hi - I've been trying to install the 1.5 firmware update on my new Mustang I. I'm following all the directions both within the Fuse application and the written instructions but every time it starts the update, gets about 5 seconds into it and aborts with an error saying to turn the amp off then on again and try again. I have the newest version of Fuse 2.0.1. I use an Intel iMac with OSX 10.6.5. I have the USB going straight into the computer, no hub. I have tried both of the update options, using the bundled version or a downloaded version of the firmware with the same results.

Now that I've given up trying to do the upgrade, I've discovered that the amp no longer works! When I turn it on, the "Save" button flashes red repeatedly and nothing else works. I tried to do a "Factory Restore" by holding the "Exit" button while turning the amp on but this also has no effect.

So, yeah, great! Any advice is much appreciated.

Yeah, I saw that but they don't say what they did! Oh well, at least there is hope...

When doing the restore are you holding the exit button down while powering up until exit button is no longer illuminated

Well, yes and no. I'm holding the Exit button forever... nothing happens... the Save button just keeps flashing and the Exit button never illuminates...

You hold the Save button while powering up to do the Firmware Update. You hold the Exit button while powering up to do the Factory Restore. The Firmware update failed repeatedly leaving the amp in a state where the Factory Restore can't be done.

Hey Webvinyl,

I apologize for the issue you're experiencing. We are looking into it now. What are your system specs exactly? You may want to try the 1.4 bundled firmware in Fender FUSE 2.0.1. You also may want to try another USB cable or another computer if there's one available.

Loren

Hi Loren - Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure which system specs you need. It's an Intel iMac running OSX 10.6.5. I have tried both the bundled firmware and the downloaded versions with the same result - the firmware update errors out about 5 seconds in.

Here are the FAQ re firmware update

http://www.fender.com/support/article.php?kb_id=147

Info elsewhere is either incomplete (ie the FUSE 2 for Mustang .pdf) or confusing (Forums)

Hope this helps.

I'm about to give it a go myself (fingers crossed)

Thanks. I did see that but it didn't help. The firmware update starts but quits before finishing leaving the Mustang in no man's land.

Good luck with yours! I'm glad I bought the Musician's Friend Gold coverage for mine cause, at this point, it looks like I'm gonna be sending it back....

We've seen a few firmware updates fail but we've never seen one that actually permanently "bricked" the amp. They are usually able to be restored by running the firmware update again. Have you noticed any issues with Fender FUSE at all? Something tells me that there could be something wrong with the install of FUSE itself that may be disrupting the update or possibly background processes running on your computer. What other USB devices do you have connected?

Hi again Loren - I can't tell you if there are any issues with Fuse as I had not really run it other than a quick look around before trying to do the Firmware update. There didn't seem to be that much point to using Fuse without the Mustang attached and, as soon as you attach the Mustang, it wants to do the Firmware update. There were no issues with Fuse that I saw but, again, all I really did was looked through the amps available and a couple things like that.

I have lots of other USB things connected to the iMac - Printer, Scanner, DVD drive, MIDI, probably some others. None of these were actually "active" during the attempted firmware update and, in fact, some of them were actually not plugged in as I removed the USB Hub that they attach to so that I could plug the Mustang straight into the iMac without a hub. Since I know someone will ask (and I forgot to mention it), I did also try a known good USB cable just in case.

So, it sounds like you are saying that maybe I should try unplugging all other USB items and trying the Firmware update? And, possibly, trying to reinstall Fuse? Do I need to remove/uninstall anything before doing this? Any other hints?

Kevin King

Hey Kevin,

Yes, I would unplug all other USB devices. Those devices shouldn't cause a problem but I've seen stranger things happen with computers. I would also reinstall Fender FUSE. Just trash the existing app and reinstall.

Loren
