You'd have to pay for postage back and all that, not to mention you'd have to buy two of them... I don't think I have enough funds for that.

Again...where do you live that you can't get to a music store?

There are three guitar shops in the city where I live. One of them has(or had) a Super Champ XD(now they only have the Vibro), none of them have the Mustang. One music shop I pass on the long journey home to my parents on the train(when I have time to get off) has the Mustang, which is where I tried it.

They do not have a Super Champ XD. In fact, I believe there is only one shop in the country where I could try both, in Dublin. I am going to Dublin this weekend, but unfortunately will not be able to get out to the shop most likely, which is a shame. Also I'd likely want to buy one after trying and I couldn't carry it around an anime convention with me, unless I was doing a K-On cosplay.

Until travel is less an issue, I'd take the software route, if you don't have a preamp with line-out, this interface/software bundle would be good value:

I would use Reaper for a DAW, and add Shred, and for high-gain, LePou ampsims may be the best, although free!

You mentioned funds, and issues with travel, so I suggested a low cost scenario that would get any guitar player chin deep in great guitar sounds, and not require any travelling.
Cheers :)

I have both amps and the #3 setting is also my favorite, the Mustang can get there or pretty close with the Champ setting in fuse with an overdrive pedal or even the compressor pedal gets it pretty darn close. Anyway there are many other fun similar options with FUSE, I think the Super Sonic can get in that family of tones as well but with a unique sound unto itself.

Cool, good to know. Can the overdrive be used as an outright clean boost too since some ODs can? Gain down low, volume max.

The overdrive has dials for

level
gain
low
mid
high

Using FUSE, it can be placed before or after the amp, there are 4 slots
before and after the amp where you can place one each of the four sound modules.

stomp
modulation
delay
reverb

The modules have a total 38 fx between them, each with 5 or 6 controls, so there is lots of precision and variety. The 12 amps and 12 cabs are very distinctive, and you can mix and match as desired.
Cheers

I have the Mustang I and had a Super Champ XD when they first came out. While I can't remember the exact sound if the SCXD model, I think you can get close enough where it wouldn't be an issue.

As for gain, the amp has multiple ways of adding gain to a preset. You've got stombox, gain knob on the amp, more than one master volume on several of the models and you can bias the "tubes" in the model hot or cold.

I'm not too familiar with owning a real tube amp or advanced modeler, does biasing the tubes warm generally add gain?

On the Mustang, I hear about a 15% difference between
minimum sag-maximum bias
and
maximum sag-minimum bias

This difference might be 'perceived' as having 11.5 on a
gain and overdrive control, instead of 10, but its more like having
a control range of 15% on any given part of the sound, with 10%
possible increase of gain and high frequencies, or a reduction
of 5% . This range is increased a bit when turning off the cab sims.

If you google sag bias tube amp, there are great infos about
what is actually happening in real tubes and circuits, and how
musicians can use the options.

Cheers
