I desperately try to update firmware of my Mustang II v.1.3 (12"/40 watts) to firmware 2.x to get access to new amp models and effects.

Problem: FUSE (2.7.1) refuses 2.1 and 2.2 versions from fender website.

Error message:
Quote:
Firmware file incorrect, this is a Mustang I/II and the file targets Mustang V2 I/II.

Does anybody know, if there are hardware differences between Mustang I/II and Mustang V2 I/II ?
As far as I know, hardware is identical, isn't it?
Why then upgrade from 1.x to 2.x is prevented?
Is there a trick to allow such upgrade?

All versions 1.x I've tested (1.10, 1.3, 1.9) were running at my amp successfully, but none of them could be upgraded to version 2.1 or 2.2. (refused by FUSE).

Can anybody help me, please?

Unfortunately, what you are trying to do is not possible with a v1 amp.

To get the v2 models and other updates, you need to buy a v2 amp. Fender did not extend a firmware update to bring the v1 amps to the same set of features for the v2.

Hi KidBlast,
thanks for your reply, do you know if there's a technical reason for?

One of my buddies is saying, he exactly did such upgrade a few years ago.
I'm not quite sure if it was really a version one so I asked him to take a photo of his amp.
He reported he has a few additional amp models and stompboxes after the upgrade.

I am quite sure the v2 amp firmware is not portable to the v1, (I tried!)

if there is another way around it, I'm not aware of any. My hunch is your friend has a v2 amp and doesn't really realize the differences.

One easy way to know is to just look at them. The v1s have a cobalt style covering, where the v2 amps have a standard black tolex style amp covering.

Ok, thanks for clarifying.
Can you remember your exact FUSE version and amp firmware versions (before/after)?

That's the point. Maybe some subversion were able to upgrade or there is a specific way to do so...

Yes I know, I've seen the photos of both styles here in the forum, and that's the reason I asked him for the photo. We'll see.

I'll tell ya what. If you can figure out how to get a v1 amp updated with v2 firmware, a lot of people are going to be pissed off. That would mean Fender chose to sell you a whole new amp and claim the v1 amps couldn't be updated when they could. And that's right after they released a defective product.

I'm not aware what Fender told people to switch from v1 to v2. That was long before I came "into business". I just bought a used v1 and thought "fine, there's v2 firmware, let's go...".
I'd really like to hear a clear official fender statement "go /no go", and if it's "no go", I'd like to know the technical background.
I asked German Fender Service, they linked me to v2-download although I mentioned clearly to have a v1 amp. I called back asking for possible problems when flashing v2 firmware over a v1 amp, but I had the impression they did not understand the question or the possibility of upcoming problems...

You think v1 Mustangs are a "defective product"? I didn't realize that...

There was a defect that some of the V1 amps developed. Do a search for "FIZZ" on the forum, and you'll find out all about it.

The latest mustang v1 firmware version is 1.10 There really is no way to get a v1 amp to have the v2 models and features. it is what it is.

Good luck getting customer support to tell you anything. your best source of info is usually right here on this forum.

going off on a tangent here ... one thing that bugs me about this amp series is it has no history. It's like nobody cares when the v1 amps were released vs. the v2 amps. Look up "Fender Mustang" in Wikipedia, and you get the guitar model. The best you've got out there is the information that was frantically compiled by users.

Meanwhile, I was jamming on my "obsolete and defective" Mustang III last night and it sounded *^&%% great.

Right!! they apparently don't exist.. My v1 MIII is still kicking too, I did have to replace the power switch,, (there's a post...) but it was a DIY job, and the part was easy to find.

Easiest way to determine the version of the Mustang I/II if V1 or V2 is it's physical appearance.

V1 - A carbon fiber appearance
V2 - Tolex

Control panel differences.
V1 has Mustang I or II below the gain, volume and other controls.
V2 has Mustang I or II in a narrow stripe above the controls.

If his looks different and he can show you a picture, then he'd already had a newer V2 box.

One other possibility? Perhaps a repair that replaced the mainboard resulted in a V2 board in a V1 box?

I'm still waiting for my friend's amp picture.

That's a good idea, but he told me he had version 1.2 firmware before he did the update to version 2.2
