Hello,

I am having trouble recording direct via USB from a Mustang III V2. I have done plenty of recording mic’ing the amp, but I wanted to try recording direct in and the tone itself sounds great, haven’t had any latency issues either but the levels are just insane, pretty much clips every note I hit, depending on the preset. Has anyone else dealt with this and had any success?

I use an iMac with Logic Pro 10.4.

having never used the usb, my only though is to ask if you have looked through some of the additional amp settings on the second screen on the LCD,, or in fused, go to advanced settings and see if there's anyway to reduce some of the amp presets output settings?

I did look into those settings, all I saw that seemed relevant was the output boost which is set at ~19.6%, but even turning it to 0% had absolutely no effect on the USB signal.

As for a Fuse, I have never been able to get it to open on my Mac and it hasn’t worked on my windows lapto in a couple of years. I’ve gave up on fuse a long time ago.

I just stopped by on my lunch break and tried a couple things:

-I tried going XLR out into my interface (stereo), and it worked and again tone was good, and the levels were good BUT there is a frequent audible crackle, almost like a bad cable but I checked the cables and guitar switches and everything and it all checked out - so not sure why there is a crackle.

-I also tried the USB again and it seems that turning the volume knob on the guitar down helps mitigate the problem, but obviously that changes the tone and sustain and so it’s not really a good answer for recording.

I guess it's personal pref... but I just like the way speakers sound when mic'd... never really seem to be happy with any sort of Direct track... even with the best of what pro tools has to offer and a bazillion different top shelf plugins... a few mic's still do it for me..

My main reason for wanting to go direct is or the stereo effects like the ping pong delay, but if I can’t figure something out soon I’ll probably give up and go back to mics.

In Fender FUSE, go to 'ADVANCED AMP' for the preset you want to use. Next to SAG and BIAS you will see USB GAIN. Try experimenting with that knob.

But since FUSE isn't working for you, try this:

1. With the amp powered on, press and hold the EXIT button

2. Turn the VOLUME knob to change the USB GAIN setting

It takes some experimenting to get it to sound right.

Thanks for that, ghost.

I actually managed to get fuse going on my Mac; I had to reinstall silver light and it loaded right up.

The bad news, however is that USB again is already set at 0% on all presets. =/

I’ve been getting some good results with recording XLR, which is cool. I’d still like to get the USB going though. It’s a vendetta now.

If that is the case, I'm thinking it's possibly a problem on the MAC side, nothing to do with the amp.

Check to see if you can adjust the GAIN for the USB input (on the Mac). Unfortunately, I live on the "Microsoft" side of the fence, so I have no idea how to change those settings on an Apple device.

Just to update you all, I dug into the Mac usb input gain and apparently there is no way to control usb input on the Mustang because usb input is controlled by the device itself. So I think the usb just is what it is.

However, I’ve been getting good results going XLR into my interface recording two tracks simultaneously and bussing them into a single track. Alternatively you can record both inputs directly into one track, but it doesn’t sound as full to me.
