just purchased a Mustang III to go with my Strat. I am interested in OLD Rock and/or Country. Did I out smart myself with the mustang. of the 99 presets, I only like/use about three. Should I have picked another Amp?

Thanks for any input.

I have the 3 version 2 and love it. Not my main amp, but i still like it. I also have about 5 presets i made that i use on a regular basis-not that much in love with most of the presets. Imho, you did not make a bad choice!

hey Butch

Nope, you didn't over think anything. There's a lot the amp can do, but I don't think any one actually uses 99 presets! :) Some guys will use a preset for each song in their set list, I think that's a bit over kill for my applications.

I need a few good sounds to get me around the tones I need. I have a III and a IV, and I have the same 5 presets setup on both, Clean (Twin), Breaking up /slight overdrive (Bassman or Deluxe), modern high gain (Super Sonic) and a few of the later that are pushed volume wise to get over the mix for leads.

I use the three QA settings, then right next to those, I have a few more that I can get to using the "up/down" control on the 4 button FS. The rest of the preset slots may as well be disabled for me.

Using the 4 button and the 2 button FS in tandem allows the triggering of stomp/delay settings and the mode control on the 4 button for the odd ball stuff.

Thank you for your help. I will take your suggestions and apply them to my Amp.

Absolutely not ! What you are doing is exactly what i do. (well, actually i use even less !) Some people see them as a amp you buy so you can have a million different sounds. Others like me look at it from a different POV. I see it as having a million possibilities so that your chances of finding the right few sounds for you. I only use one patch in a band context and use it all nite without changing anything aside from controlling the clean to OD and tone with my guitar and occasionally using a chorus. Do i feel like i;m wasting all the other stuff i never use? Hell no ! If you buy a tube amp you have basically one sound. What are the chances that one sound will fit you perfectly? All you can do with the 5 or 8 knobs on a tube amp is fine tune it, but if that amp's tone is not your thing no amount of fine tuning will make it so. With the mustang you have so many possibilities you CAN find YOUR sound ! So forget about what you don;t use. that is all there to make others who don't share your exact preferences happy with the amp.

Granted, they can be used by those who want a ton of patches and different sounds, but all that matters is that you are happy with the 2 or 3 you use. I don't see why it should bother you that there are a lot of unused things. The fact is there is no right or wrong, it's just how well it works for you. myself, i don';t use 99.9% of what it;s capable of, but i DO like having it all just in case i get bored at home and want to explore, or i playing out and a tune would really benefit with a pitch shifter or whatever. Always no=ice to have all that stuff and other models which u never know may come in handy. Just enjoy the thing.....you like what it does so you did buy the right amp !

You are in the right place here.

Experiment with your amp daily.

It is similar to the EADGC pattern of your guitar.
Come back often, ask more specified questions,
be patient, music will come to you soon

The Mustangs are like a synthesizer, with vast sonic range.
You can get some good ideas listening to synth presets,
to keep a solid in-genre sound, or rise over the top,
to add some special nuance and icing.

Using filters, gain-staging, modulations, ambience,
cabinet choices, and amp controls, you can build an array of
unique takes on your favorite sounds. Make a signal chain,
in your preferred style, and try it with every amp, when you find a keeper,
save it, then try that new preset with every cab, and save another...
then add some extras for a more personal signature, per song.
Pandora never had it so good. And just in time for the weekend!
Cheers

Don't judge the amp by the stock presets. Every one of those presets is created using the voicing of a particular guitar (e.g. Strat for one, Tele for another, Les Paul for another, etc.).

So if your guitar model is not the same as the one used when the preset was created, it will most likely suck. I probably would have returned my Mustang if I stuck with only the presets, couldn't stand most of them.

I found that to be the case with both my Mustang III v2 (for my guitar) and my Fender Bronco 40 (for my bass).

It took me months of tweaking to get the exact sounds I wanted, but the pain was well worth it. You can get the exact sound you want IF you take the time to learn how to properly use the FUSE software.

Btw, a Fender Tele played through the Fender Bronco 40 (bass amp) with a Bassman TV preset is unreal. Found that one by accident.

One thing not yet mentioned is to download presets from the Fender Community website using the FUSE software. There are a lot of good sounding presets that others have generated that you can test out there.
