Has anyone ever run a 1/8 to 1/8 cable from a fender mustang amp to something like IK iLoud? The stereo sound is awesome and I want to convert the amp from Just a mono speaker to a wide stereo sound that's loud and still rocks the guitar tone and feel.

And if I do this, what would happen if I run an MP3 player into the aux jack first? Would I get a nice MP3 sound in the monitors too? (Backing music plus guitar)

Feeding an MP3 player into the Mustang's AuxIn jack will work just fine. The Mustang's Speakers (all of the v.2 models) are not Full Range Flat Response (FRFR)! The speakers are designed for electic guitar. The Celestion Spkrs in the MIV v.2 and MIII v.2 roll off dramatically at about 4.5kHz. See Celestion's speaker freq response charts for more details.

As soon as you connect to the Mustang's Headphone's Out jack, the audio is cut from the speakers. So the result you will hear is a much fuller range flatter response. Thus, if you connect a pair of decent Monitors you will hear a more full range playback of your mp3 sound source.

The Guitar's tones heard from the selected Preset's tone stack and Advanced Amp Settings (most notably the Cab Sim selected in the Preset) will have a significant affect on what the guitar will sound like from your Monitor speakers. Perhaps the biggest factor in this context is the capability of the Monitor Speakers you connect to the Mustang.

I have no tried the iLoud speakers, but I have tried numerous powered Studio Monitors and FRFR Monitors. Each has a very different characteristic.

If you like the sound you get, you're good to go! Otherwise, try another set of Monitors. YMMV

You guys are awesome. That is excellent information and confirmation of what I am after.

So in summary, If I plug my phone into the aux Jack, my music plays through the anp speaker but doesn't sound great, but the guitar does. But if I plug the headphones jack out to some good monitors, the amp is muted and in the monitors I'll get a full range mix of the phone/MP3 music plus my guitar that all sound anywhere from good to great. Right?

If so, then I just need to decide what monitors to buy. I would like to spend between $100 and $300, and since my input source will be coming from the headphones jack, I assume I need a pair that have a 1/8 in, or get an 1/8 to 1/4 adapter.

Any recommendations?

Thanks so much!

Yes.

Yes.

Pretty much.

Check out Behringer for monitors. Ugh, I cannot believe I am recommending the B but they have come around over the last two decades and are cheap China knock-offs or whatever you want to call them.

They do the engineering and then have Chinese cheap labor do the dance. Call it for what it is but most everything now is made in China because of cheap labor costs coming from North Korea and China. I wish I hadn't just wrote this. What is the world coming to.

Yes.

Personally I have been flying (tripod speaker stands) Mackie SRM 450s Version 1 which was the best version out of the three. I think they were made in Italy. I bought them 16 years ago and not a single issue and they will move walls they are so loud. Way overkill for your needs I am sure and double in price of your high budget range that you gave.

You could pick up in your budget the Behringer Eurolive B112D 1000W 12" Powered Speaker for $250.00 and they are getting really good reviews but again probably way too much power for what you probably need or want but I am just trying to give you some reference and one in your budget range.

I wouldn't buy the current line of Mackies plus the Thump is $100.00 more with a 15 inch woofer but their speaker line have had issues and I would probably look elsewhere.

Try to listen to as many different powered speakers as you can! Depnding how you intend to position them (desktop, floor, pedestal, etc.) will also affect what may make sense for you.

Also, the XLR Line Outs on the Mustang models: III/IV/V do not pass the AuxIn Audio! On first thought this may seem to preclude your using them for your scenario. However, as you will find, many of the Studio Monitor and FRFR Monitors have multiple simultaneously usable inputs with separate input level controls. Thus, you could connect your MP3 player directly to the Speakers, and connect your Mustang to the Speakers via XLR Line out. Doing this will also leave the Mustang's speaker active for the guitar. Thus, you would still be able to retain that Amp In The Room experience. You would simply adjust the Master on the Mustang to adjust the Mustang's room level. The Mustang's Master Volume control does not affect the signal level from the XLR Line Outs. That is done via the UTIL Buttom Menu.

You have choices as to how to configure your rig.

If you can find a set of the JBL LSR305 near field Studio Monitors on sale, they were going for $99 each a few months ago. They sound really good!

Good suggestion in regard to the dual inputs and the directional output. I never even considered studio monitors. I was thinking more about what Archtop Bill was saying about grab and go with handles. My SRM 450's do not have to fly. They can be laid down on the angle side and can even double as stage monitors.

When I expanded my rig last year, after demoning a bunch of gear, I finally chose to go with a set of JBL LSR308 near field Studio Monitors, and a set of Yamaha DXR10 Monitors. The Yamahas are pricey, but they serve as Wedge Monitors, Backline, and Mains, and they're covered by Yamaha's 7 year warranty. They are jewels and sound phenomenal!

Sweet speakers most definitely. It is funny because I came within a hair follicle close to recommending the Yammy DXR line but knew it was way over his budget of $100.00 - $300.00 so I suggested the Behringer product line instead. Even the 8 inch powered speaker is around $549.00.

If I were in the market and had the budget for it I would definitely go with the DXR line at this point and time. They are also *rugged* which was my point about studio monitors earlier.

The Yamaha DBR series sound nearly identical to the DXR series, and they're more reasonably priced! And, yes the JBL LSR's exposed speaker cone really renders them most suited for out of the way near field positioning. Certainly not as Floor Monitors.
