I just bought a new mustang 1 v2 to upgrade from the Peavey 10w practice amp I've been using. Used to have a mustang 3 but I sold it shortly after moving into a small apartment. My issue is the mustang should be putting out a bit more volume with it being 20w vs 10w & a 8in speaker vs 6in one in my old amp. Except its not my old amp sounds noticeably louder especially at lower gain settings. I Pretty much have to turn it up to 5-8 just to be louder then strumming the guitar. Also the headphone jack barely puts out enough volume even with the volume set at 10. I can plug the same headphones into my phone though and blow my eardrums out.

With the gain turned way up the amp does get loud enough but I was hoping for more clean headroom. I'm wondering if this is normal or not? Or any idea if something on my end could be causing a issue. I'm not sure about returning the amp yet. It does sound decent. What do you guys think?

You can squeeze more volume out of the presets by adding a post gain compressor after the amp modelling. Set all buttons to zero use level to your taste.

Hi Surreal,

You may recall from your mustang III experiences, volume leveling is one of the first things to be done with a new mustang amp. where one preset will be much louder than another is one of the more annoying aspects of the factory setups.

Install fuse on your PC if you can, and then go thru the presets you want to use, checking carefully the advanced amp settings will a low you to get to the biasing, sag, speaker emulator, and other params in advanced settings page to help with the getting volume settings that seem right for your ears.

Good luck!! :)

Sounds to me like it's faulty - out of the box a new Mustang is loud. (I've only used a II and a III)

First thing I did before even turning on the amp was install fuse. Most of the factory presets were awful on my M3 so I didn't even bother trying them this time around. The amp just seems quieter compared to other 15w-20w modeling amps I've had in the past. For example the British 60's amp model was one of my favorites on my old M3. Its pretty much unusable at lower gain settings on the M1 I have though. To get the volume louder then strumming my guitar unplugged I have to crank the gain/volume/master volume to 10.

Adjusting the sag higher just makes the volume even lower and the bias really doesn't seem to effect the volume level only the amount of breakup. Getting nice clean tones at a reasonable home practice level is hard. Some of the amp models are worse then others but they all sound under powered. Also the amp appeared to be non factory sealed like someone had returned it before. Makes me wonder if someone else returned it for the same reason. The retailer gets it back and gives it a quick test. Since it appears to be fine they box it back up and eventually send it to me.
