I've been recording some songs and the only thing they lack are vocals. Can I plug a microphone directly into the amp guitar input and record in ableton via usb cable? Has someone tried this?
Thanks!

There is no danger to do that. You may need a outboard preamp, microphone don't have enough output like a guitar.

there is no reason it wouldn't work (assuming you can get the mic signal loud enough), but ... I can almost guarantee it will sound bad.

Since you are recording on a computer, why not plug the microphone into the computer instead? That way the amp signal processing won't further color the sound (in a bad way).

A dynamic mic won't work because not enough output, a condenser mic will need phantom power -- in both cases you need a USB interface box. You might look at some of the cheaper USB mics that have it all built in. Depending on your seriousness, you can get something as cheap as the Blue Snowball (~$20 used, my son got one and it's pretty good) or move up to a Blue Yeti (~$100 new) which is pretty well respected.

I haven't tried plugging my mic straight into my MIII, so I don't know what you'll get there.

Personally, I like my little Tascam Portastudio for recording (since I'm not tethered to my computer!)... and then transfer to computer when I want to do final mixing and mastering... it's cheaper than a quality interface box and offers portability etc...
