Hello,

I'm wondering which volume pedal I could use best with the Mustang III (V2).

I want to use it to only affect the volume, not the gain/sound of the amp. Meaning: it should not act like changing the settings of the volume knob on the guitar.

I tried out a Fender FVP-1. In front of the amp, this works like turning the guitar volume knob. So, I placed it in send-return. However, when pushing the pedal toe down (slowly), the volume does not really gradually turn up. Just before the pedal "hits the metal" (i.e. is in the max toe pushed down position), it suddenly jumps to a much higher volume level. So, basically I only have very little "room" to make volume adjustments and I have to be extremely careful when adjusting. This makes the FVP-1 unusable in a live set-up for me.

Would the (much more expensive) EXP-1, do a better job?

Any other suggestions that you know will do the job in combination with the Mustang III (V2)?

Thanks!

You've got a few alternatives.

One way is to use any Volume Pedal of your choice, that you would place in the signal chain between your guitar and the front end (main instrument input) of the Mustang. People have been doing such for years with good response. Just make sure that the pedal you use fits your needs, price, etc., and if you wish, has a Bypass mode that does not affect the tone you get from your Mustang.

The other alternative is to get the dedicated Fender EXP-1 Expression and Volume Pedal designed specifically for use with the Mustang III/IV/V Amps. I have two of these, one for each of my Mustangs, and they work great! The Pedal has two modes. One is Volume Mode. One is Expression Mode. Once you configure the pedal with your Mustang, you choose how to use it. You may configure it solely for Volume. However, the real benefits are that for each and every Preset in your Mustang, you may configure the EXP-1 to also control (nearly) any parmeter you may desire in the Amp! That you then Save to the Preset.
