I've been playing with the Mustang Floor into a Mustang IV and found if I come in through the FX returns, leave the amp is "normal" vs "looper" and use the Studio pre preset with a cab selected and cab disabled on the floor it sounds really good but I'll have to remove the cab from every preset on my floor.

In "looper" mode through FX returns the Mustang floor with or without cab sounds like a blanket is over the amp. So this method is out as any distortion patch sounds terrible.

But last night I tried a 4 cable method. Guitar into Floor input. Mustang Floor FX send into amp input. Amp send (mono to 2 x mono splitter) to Floor Loop return. Unbalanced output to FX return (mono to 2 x mono splitter). Using the studio pre preset with no cabinet selected.

I felt this sounded the best even though most people say the floor doesn't work with 4 CM due to not being able to change the FX chain.

Does this just sound better because the distortion is coming first, and this would make delays and reverbs sound worse? I feel distortions through the FX returns is bad enough to consider that method unusable.

Any ideas why this sounds the best? Any suggestions on other ways to do this?

Sorry, I cannot help you. I use the Floor as a stand alone foot pedal and processor with a wah/volume, a distortion unit on the front end and a looper on the back end if I want it. Never tried to do what you are doing, but good luck with it.

If i understand correctly how the two units can work together, i think we have 3 possible combination:

simple: guitar->floor->amp

fx of the floor before the amp

floor in the loop: guitar->amp send->floor->amp return

fx of the floor placed after the model of the amp

4cm: guitar->floor send->amp send->floor return->amp return

exaclty the same as guitar->amp send->floor->amp return since nothing is processed before the send/return of the floor

Where this lead us?

Avoid the 4cm and put the floor in the send return of the amp if you want to use for mod/delay/rev things

or put the floor in front of the amp if you want to use the floor for OD/COMPRESSION things (mostly to control them)

the 4cm is just more cables and noise.

The true success of a 4CM setup will depend on whether or not your floor modeler is set up for it. Beyond the physical I/O, the floor modeler should perform some internal signal re-routing of the efx and modeling chain. For the times that the guitar signal is switched to the guitar amp (front-panel) input, modeling in the floor unit should be bypassed, pre-effects (especially distortion and overdrives) should be re-routed the amp input, and post effects (mods, delays) should be routed to the efx return of the amp. This should be taken care off internally, by the floor unit, when you switch to the "amp loop" (i.e., using your amp's front end instead of the floor unit's modeling, and using just the efx of the floor unit). The really important feature of the floor unit at this point is segregating and re-routing pre- and post-efx and not just bypassing the floor unit's amp modeling. Some mfx units do this automatically (e.g., the DigiTech RP1000), and others let you manually set the internal routing of your efx chain, if not globally, on a per-patch basis. Distortion/high-gain patches not internally re-routed properly will generally yield undesired and uncontrollable results, especially with the distortions and modeling switched on. Your running a preamp into a preamp into a preamp. It becomes a gain-staging nightmare.
