I'm currently playing with a couple other guys, and we use one of the Bose towers for a PA. Mostly low volume stuff, hardly ever any drums or bass.
I'm thinking about going to a Zoom G3X, and running it direct into the PA. For those occasions where I needed more stage volume, I figure I can run the Zoom into my Mustang III return. But for practices and most gigs, I would much rather carry the G3X around than the Mustang amp.
I am also pretty frustrated with Fender, they seem to have pretty much abandoned the Mustang/Fuse line, and all of it's users.
Just wondered about any thoughts on this from other forum users, a lot of you have more experience than I do.
Thanks!

As I shared in other posts, my MIV V2 got traded in for a Super-Sonic 22 six months ago. Still happy with the decision.

I still have and plan to keep my Mustang Mini for the rare instance I need a headphone amp.

I'm not quite sold on buying a processor and counting on the PA. If you go that route, let us know how it goes.

Although not thinking about selling either of my Mustang amps anytime soon, I have been looking closely at Line 6's Helix. It is a very impressive Amp Profiling and FX unit, with an outstanding Visual User Interface, terrific Physical Controls, and much more.... Its first year has seen several impressive Software Updates and the Editor has evolved nicely.

It is truly unfortunate that Fender has not replaced the discontinued Mustang Floor unit with anything, and has let the entire Mustang/FUSE Line lie dormant for several years.

Meanwhile, this week Fender's email campaign re-announced their new line of hand wired tweed amps in succession to this year's earlier introduction of the bassbreaker amps. Apparently, Fender is dwelling in the realm of traditional amp units (where they do very well), while the state of the art evolves on a different bearing.

I have no doubt Fender could introduce a competent successor to the Mustang Floor. The primary questions are whether we will ever see such a Fender product, and whether it will have the multi-fasceted broad range capabilities of products like the Helix and Fractal's Axe FX line which do masterful jobs rendering Fender like tones as well as many others.

In the meantime, my Mustang's continue to work well. And, their FX Returns allow them to be used as powered cabs! ;)

Well said ML, and to add I believe Fender has seen a negative hit on their more pricier tube amps because of modelling and they were indeed a part of it with a good line of Mustang products. Obviously they have back pedaled to the older technologies that make them more money I suppose. China and Russia are still making tubes for now but we will see. Just look at how light bulbs have evolved and are so much more environmentally friendly. Geez, I can run my Mustang all day from my car battery and a power inverter.

Modeling is not going away and will only get much better so they better be very afraid if they don't continue to compete in this arena because those other one trick ponies that they continue to sell will sell less and less I promise. I just sold three but hey people bought them. <g>

I own a Zoom Multi stomp and i've tried to use it with the headphones to archive a very compact system but the amp simulation not only are not on par with the fender ones, but also they arent at good good enough to be used.

If we speak about the rest of the effect they are very good but hte amp modeling is not.

The Helix is a nice tool but it is fairly overpriced. A good interface is not a good reason to make us pay that money. A good interface is very cheap to develop today and should come with product in any range of price.

yea, Fender has clearly abandoned development on the digital amps

I think I will soon be moving to a Marshall Code, and will prob. off my MIII V1.. (and afaik it doesn't have the dreaded hiss, at least I can't hear it..)

I am probably going to keep the V1 MIV however.

I plan to keep my MIII, so I can use it as an onstage powered cab if I need it. So I won't be totally dependent on the PA. Most of our stuff is fairly low volume anyway.
Helix or Axe-FX are great units, but to pricey for me right now, with what I'm doing. A lot of our gigs are free or benefits, so I can't justify spending 1500-2000. Plus I'm not sure I want to take on that learning curve right now.
Understand about the amp modeling concerns with the Zoom, I've read good and bad about them. As above, I plan to keep the Mustang, so I should be able to find something that works.
Thanks for all the responses. I really wish Fender would come back to the modeling idea.

Frankly, the stangs still work/sound as good as the day we bought them.

A bit disappointed that Fender has not "Next Gen'd" these.

I gave up on the mustang foot switch config for live playing. The second EXP-1 I had got flaky and sometimes wouldn't power once in awhile so I took it back.

I have a real nice 65 deluxe reverb patch that is clean when my attack is lighter and breaks up nicely when I hit it hard. I put my Digitech RP-500 in front in pedal board mode... so it offers volume, wah - then delay, reverb, distortion, FX, etc I turn on and off on the fly. Honestly, the mustang IV is cheaper than a real 65 deluxe and lighter.. so I'm pretty happy with it for now. I'm going to setup a few other classic fender amps and maybe just go up and down between them live using the RP-500 for distortion and other stomps.

I'm about to make the jump as well, now that my band is playing more gigs. I'll still keep my MIIIV2 for small gigs but I think it's obvious that Fender is done developing them. I'm trying to decide which tube amp to go for right now. I still love my mustang but I'm ready to find a good tune amp and get to know it very well.

I'm still sold on the modeling idea. But between Fender having abandoned the Mustang line, and not wanting to carry even my 36# III around if I don't have to, I want to try something different.
We have a PA I can run through, and most of our venues are small enough that I won't need the stage volume of an amp on stage, so a floor unit seems like a good idea.

Yup! A feature rich Amp profiling and FX foot board unit is very compelling! Even the Line 6 Helix at 15 lbs. is less than half the weight of a Mustang III v.2. Of course, it needs something (Headphones, Monitor, Amp, FRFR, FOH, etc.) to be heard. And, I'd gladly buy a Fender product with their 5 year warranty. It really is too bad, Fender does not currently have a product in this category.

Hang on to the Mustangs IMHO. They may end up being a collectable. In places like Japan audio gear has been collected as showpieces even if they don't work. Ya never know. Just sayin'

I took my MIV to a jam on saturday. I have to say, it kept right up with a boutique tube amp costing many times that of the $299 I paid for the MIV.

Of course there's a depth and vibe to each that wasn't the same. but once the bass player and drummer got going, the differences got a bit lost in the chaos.

When the jam was done, I left with my les paul in one hand, the MIV in the other..

For this kind of event,, oh ya.. they do work...

I still like my Mustang. Sounds better than the day I brought it home now that the speaker is broken in. I don't see any need to move on as long as it keeps kicking. I still think it has the best sounding models of any modeling amp in the price range.

I could understand the desire to go all through the PA if your gigs are always the same setup. If it sounds good, why not?
