So I picked up a used Mustang 3 v2 last week... but was curious about the IV v2... so I ordered one. Now I get to play them side by side in my house with my guitars and what I found was a bit strange.

There is another thread here where someone else did the same thing. These amps sound nothing alike. The 3 uses a Celestion G12T-100 and the Mustang IV uses Celestion G12P-80 speakers. The Mustang 3 sounds clear, loud and bright - the same patch on the IV sounds darker, slightly muddy and more metal. Now I'm really having a hard time deciding which to keep. I love the way the IV moves more air, really shakes the floor but the 3 has a cut and clarity the 4 doesn't....

tomorrow I'll play with disabling the cab sims on the IV and see if I can get something closer to the 3, I do play in a band but we all go DI from various devices for practices and use amps for gigs, so it might be awhile before I get to use this with the band. We do some outdoor gigs which the 2 x 12 would definitely be more effective for. I can only keep one of these though. Any suggestions?

Buy another MIII and put both G12Ts into the MIV - best of both worlds! ;)

I have a III and IV (v1).

If I had to move one of them, it'd be the III,, I'd keep the IV as it just does cover more situations.

Hmmmm interesting, I find the MIII a little overly-bright for my liking. Maybe the IV is more my speed.

I did find with 01 white chapel if I kick up the treble on the IV they are more alike. And with Liquid solo if I change the cab sim to 4x12G from 4x12V (I think is stock in the patch) on the IV it brightens it up. I think I'm gonna keep the IV and just tweak the patches.

I was thinking about trying to find some cheap G12T-75's but if I'm going that far I'll just keep the Mustang 3 install a switched output and buy a 2x12 or 4x12 to run it through for outdoor gigs.

We'll see I have 45 days to return the IV if I decide to keep the smaller one. If I hadn't been able to run them side by side I wouldn't have thought there was a difference.

Identical Factory Presets sound different on the Mustang IV v.2 and Mustang III v.2, due to their distinct speakers and configuration.

Even at lower volume (SPL) levels, well before the Mustang IV's higher 150W power kicks in, the Mustang IV's 2x12 Celestion G12P-80 are, to my ears, superior and distinctly preferable to the Mustang III's 1x12 Celestion G12T-100. The latter, some have characterized as a sonic ice pick.

I spent days demoing both amps at several stores. Once ready to buy, the MIV was out of stock. The Store Mgr suggested I take home an MIII, while the MIV shipped. Once the MIV arrived, I compared them at home, side by side, for another month. I decided to keep both!

One of the common attributes frequently depicted as a negative finding or complaint about the Mustangs is they are foind to be too shrill, sharp, edgy, or overly bright, regardless if FX are dialed in. More often, such reports are posted by users of the Mustang III and lower models in the line.

Owning both the Mustang III v.2 and Mustang IV v.2, now for over a year and a half, each has it's own distinct traits. I frequently use them together achieving a spectacular blend. When only using one, my Go To is the Mustang IV v.2. Nonetheless, the MIII is not neglected. ;)

If I could have only one, it would absolutely be the Mustang IV v.2 for it's fuller, richer, smoother sound, and the features of the included 4btn fsw; which I also added for my MIII. The optional EXP-1 Volume and Expression Pedal is also a great addition, if you know what FX parameter you desire to Express for any given Preset, or, if you're inclined to explore and experiment. Otherwise, forgo the EXP-1.

Thanks for the reply at first I thought something was wrong until I looked online and other folks noted the same thing. As for the exp I've got a digitech rp500 I can run in pedalboard mode for volume control and wah I'll probably use it in front of for live gigs.
