Hey everyone,
I just acquired a used MustangV head. When I first turn it on, after about 2-3 minutes, it begins to cut out. Like, I will strike a note, or a chord, and no sound will come for a split second, then it will.
It is strange behavior. It first started to do it when I turned the gain on one of the '65 Twin presets. If I turned gain up past 5, it would do it. But then it started feeding back and doing this cutting out on every preset. Well, this was my first use of the amp, and I was scrolling through the presets from 00 up. I switched to 99 down, and it stopped. The next day, when it happened again, I kept playing, and after 10 or 15 minutes, it stopped. I played it the rest of the night at band rehearsal, no problems, but, I had programmed three of my own custom presets, and was only using them at rehearsal.
Long explanation, I know, but, wanted my problem understood. One other thing, the amp is running Firmware version 1. I noticed version 2 is available, adding it may help.
Does anyone know about this problem?
Why it is happening?
Is it "user error", or amp mal-function?
Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks,
GUS
P.S. I posted this in the "Modern Amp" forum before I found this one.

Hey man!

no,, it should not be doing that, and it's likely NOT a user error. T

These behave like any other amp, aside from what goes on internally.. Where it's used, there could be some crap in the input jack where the connection isn't always 100%... at least that's the first place to look I suppose.

have you tried to move the cable around at all to see if you can get it to misbehave?

and assuming you tried a few known-good-cables?

The have been posts that some users remedied pblms with their amps by opening them to access, disconnect, clean (using DeOxit or equiv electronic tuner/contact cleaner), and then reseating the several ribbon cables interconnecting the boards.

If Fender service declines to accept your MV under warranty, you may want to try the DIY approach.

Someone referred me to this website/link, regarding ¨sag¨. I wonder if this explains it.

BTW, if you don know this wikki, lots of great info. Especially for newbies, like me.

Thanks tho

I've never seen a sag setting cause the amp to cut out like you describe.

I'm 2 days short of one week with my MV. Now I'm wondering about cables.
To connect the speaker cabinet, I assume if I use a product from a reputable dealer, e.g., Guitar Center, etc., I'll get what I need, but, do I want shielded or unshielded?

Same question for my foot switch. I've been using a guitar cable, is that bad? What should I be using?

Thanks

passive speaker cables are always (and should be) unshielded.

the cable for all fender foot switches are unshielded as well, a regular instrument cable works ok and will not hurt anything. it's just a signal path for the program changes activated by the foot switch

The load going out of the amp to passive speakers is a different issue entirely. never use a shielded cable there, it can and eventually will damage the amp. The only time you wont use an unshielded cable to a speaker is if it's active (like a powered PA speaker or monitor) in this case, those NEED to be shielded.

For what you need, any speaker (unshielded) cable will do. just find one that's a matching length, and you're good to go.

I used to use lamp cord and make my own, but they are so dirt cheap these days it's not worth the effort.

Gus, have you tried using headphones (w/o a spkr cabinet connected) to determine if the head still cuts out intermittently while using those problematic Presets?

An intermittent fault anywhere in the guitar to amp chain (guitar's female 1/4" jack, male 1/4" connector @ guitar, cable, male 1/4" connector @ amp, amp's 1/4" female jack) could also cause the dropouts you depict. Try another cable and test them all for continunity while flexing them (particularly near the connectors).

If you were using both of the head's speaker output jacks to connect to your Line 6 4x12 cabinet, and the cutouts killed all sound, the it ks not likely to be those head to cabinet cables as having both fail simultaneously and repeatedly would be almost unheard of (punn intended)! ;)

Never encountered a Sag related cut out w/ any of my Mustang presets, many of which have Sag set to minimum.

I definitely will do the troubleshooting you are suggesting.

Thanks again

Care to give a technical explanation why that should be?

Hi Chris,, sure I can offer some info. Basically the shield in a coax cable adds capacitance which significantly alters the impedance of the load from the amp. It's not a healthy thing for either the amp, or the speakers.

here's a few links that were pretty easy to find to further explain:

Okay, still reading and following information trails. KidBlast, you posted a link to "treble.com." I read that article, which was very helpful. Then I followed a link on that page to an article about impedance.

http://www.notreble.com/buzz/2010/05/27/speaker-impedance-how-to-properly-match-your-amp-head-with-cabinets/

One of the things he talks about in the article is a "db pad". The article says, "Many amps will also have a db pad to cut the output by 20 or 15 db. "

When I first noticed the problem was when I had significantly increased the "gain" on a preset. The amp was a '65 Twin. I don't remember the name of the preset, (I'm at work), but I think it is #2. It's the first one up from 00 that has the '65 Twin in it.

Does my Mustang V have a built in db pad? Could the problem I described in my original post when I started this thread be "clipping"? , or the result of a db pad?

Hi Gus

I've never heard about a "stang" having such a pad.. maybe it's there, and I just never touched on it.

I would try a factory reset.
A good ole reboot harms nothing? Backup first.
1. Turn the amplifier OFF.
2. Press and hold the EXIT button while turning the amplifier ON.

Everything will now be erased leaving factory settings.
I have had my MIII about 3yrs i had to use this once....old age gets the better of me...Nope can`t remember why??
