I purchased a Mustang I for practice a few months ago and I'm so frustrated with it I'm ready to gut the insides and plant tomatoes in it. Don't understand what I'm missing on this amp. All I want is to hear clean sound. No effects, no amp simulation. I get it sounding the way I want and next thing I know lights start blinking and I lose my clean sound. Turn the amp off and I go through the same thing next time I use it. (Yes- it's definitely my fault for not checking it out before I purchased it). Question- Is possible to disable the software and turn it into a normal amp? I've got some good wire snips if someone can tell me what to do. If not, it's headin' for the garden!

I wouldn't recommend it. It's made you-know-where, and might leak harmful chemicals.

Here are some other possible ways to repurpose it:

If you've got an Android device you can use the REMUDA App to fully edit and control the amp as you desire. Otherwise you have to do so via the Amp or use Fender's FUSE software.

so it starts to change settings all on it's own whim?

I don't have a the 1, I have a 3 and a 4, they are pretty much rock solid.

have you tried to use Fuse/w your PC to get access to the settings ?

yeah all joking aside, that is not normal. I would take it back under warranty if that's what's happening.

Those are some pretty funny pictures! No, I haven't tried to connect the amp to my PC. I'll give that a try. I haven't updated the firmware yet either. I bet I've pushed the SAVE button a hundred times in my efforts to get back to the clean sound. Is there a way to reset the amp back to factory default? I really do love Fender products. I have a 1977 Vibrolux Reverb, a FM65R, a T-Bucket, and a 12 string. I play a vintage Gretsch thru the '77 amp and the combination of the two is perfect for me. I like 50's/60's music- especially Duane Eddy, The Ventures, and The Shadows. I get together with a group of friends for an open jam and would really like to start using the Mustang. I hurt my back recently so the Vibrolux is hard for me to lug around now. The FM65R is not quite as bad, but the Mustang is very very light and I think it would pack a big enough punch for these jams. Just need to learn how to keep the amp to stay clean. The Bigsby gives me all the "effects" I need. Thank you for your comments.

You definitely need to hook the amp up to your computer and get the Fuse software running. Spend a couple hours learning how it all works, what the amp sims and effects are and how to save to the amp the ones you want. If you don't have the manual, you can download it from the Fender site. There is a way to restore the factory default settings, but it doesn't sound like those will be what you want. Believe me, the sound you want (Ventures, Shadows, etc.) can be had with this amp. You just need to spend some time learning it.

When you get Fuse connected to the amp, try the Twin or Deluxe amp, no effects except a bit of reverb. You'll like it. Understand that the physical knob settings and the actual settings (for volume, bass, treble, reverb, etc.) are not the same. Again, do some reading and it will make sense. The Mustang amps are great, but there's a learning curve.

"To restore the Mustang amplifier to factory settings:

1. Turn the amplifier OFF.
2. Press and hold the EXIT button while turning the amplifier ON. Continue holding the EXIT button until it is no longer illuminated.

The FACTORY RESTORE function will erase all user modified presets. It will also restore the AMBER bank of presets and any effect selections that have been modified using Fender FUSE software."

if you can get fuse working, it might be a game changer for you in regard to getting at the settings, but if there's some sort of malfunction going on, where something is causing the amp to activate setting changes on it's own, Fuse probably won't change that.

wonder if some of the buttons on the control panel have got some dust in there,, vibrations when playing are causing some intermittent connection to alter a preset?? (just a guess)...

I would highly recommend running the latest firmware too - no good reason not to.

Unless it was bought used and is several years old, it's unlikely it won't have the "latest" firmware.

Connecting your Amp to your computer and using FUSE is required to update the amp's firmware, if needed!

Also know that the current firmware is several years old, but it is newer than the last version of FUSE! Thus, unless you first download and have the newer firmware available on your computer for FUSE to install from your computer to your amp, and direct FUSE to use the newer firmware, FUSE may install it's older firmware version to your amp! Others have reported this problem! (I have not stepped through this process as all my gear came with the latest firmware installed.)

Also, the Android REMUDA App's Settings Screen displays the Firmware version of the amp to which it is connected. REMUDA does not have the ability to update the firmware.

Ok, you need to do a tiny bit of work reading how the amp works.

I recommend figuring out how to get to '65 Twin Reverb amp. Turn off the gain and effects and save it to one of the user presets. Tweak the tone knobs and save again. Then just go to that user preset every time.

Yes, the I & II are kind of pain to get setup (which is why I bought a III), but I did learn enough to occasionally use my gf's I when we've jammed together at her house.

Hint, the amp dial cycles through LCD colors, one is factory set, but the other two can be saved to.

As others have said, the amp works nicer when connected to a computer or the android app (though I haven't tried it).

But just to play:

1) set amber LCD to 65 Twin using PRESET knob
2) turn MOD and DLY/REV knobs to OFF
3) turn GAIN knob to "0"
4) adjust TREBLE and BASS to your liking

Wahlah! Clean sound!
