The Sound Pressure Levels (SPL) of the Seventeen (17) Basic Modeled Amps in the (v2) Mustang III/IV/V factory Presets 83 through 99 vary dramatically -- by as much as 10dba with the Mustang's Master Volume set at 3 (or 4)! Many users find it helpful to equalize the Volumes amongst the modeled amp Presets to subsequently customize further and save.

These 17 factory Presets have their FX banks set to "Empty." This presents each modeled amp's unique sound characteristics with its own distinct factory default configuration of parameter value settings.

Measured at a distance of Three Feet (3') perpendicular to the front center of the speaker cabinet an A-weighted, calibrated db meter was used to measure the SPLs of the 17 factory default modeled amp Presets with the (v2) Mustang IV's Master Volume set at 3 and 4. The results are below.

As the Basic Preamp modeled amp (Preset 83) produced the quietest SPL, and has a factory default Preset Volume value setting of 10, this Preset's SPL value was used as the reference. The Preset Volume of each of the other 16 factory default Basic Amp Presets were noted and then attenuated (reduced) to approximately equalize their respective SPLs to that of the Basic Preamp Preset. That information is below.

The test used an Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro with both Probucker pickups in the normal phase position with the guitar's vol and tone pots wide open. An open G chord was aggressively strummed using a pick to attain the highest SPL. The REMUDA App was used for Amp control values.

Thanks for those test results can come in handy, i balance my volumes by ear but you can definitely hear all the models differ in volume. What I have noticed is the speaker emulations are what causes the loudness differences, I noticed it when trying to use the XLR out which unfortunately makes them useless for me for live playing since I use 2 different amp models unless I use the same speaker config or just one model.

Try testing just one amp model and changing only the speaker cabs and see what the levels are!

Yup! Changing the Cab Sim used by any of the Modeled Amps can dramatically alter the SPL as well as the sound's tonal characteristics!

This is why Fender's FX Loop reference document suggests that when using a Looper, the Mustang's Util Menu "Looper" Setting be used (rather than the "Normal" setting) if Presets using different Cab Sims will be used. Some users have reported that setting the Cab Sim to "Off" sometimes better suits a particular need.

The SPL readings posted in this thread, intentionally do not involve changing the Cab Sims, nor any other Preset parameters! In this regard, they reflect relative similar SPL starting points for the Basic Amp profiles.

In actual use, changing a Preset's Gain Parameter also can significantly affect the SPL! And with, the British Watts, British 60's, British 80s, British Colour, Fender Super-Sonic, American 90's and Metal 2000 Amp models their Advanced Amp settings offer a Master Volume parameter -- in addition to the regular Preset Volume! Thus, the interplay between the Gain, Volume, and Advanced Amp Master Volume can be significant!

Most often I'll dial in a desired tone using the modeled Amp and Advanced Amp settings, and FX settings (if any), then further tweak, and again adjust the Preset Volume as one of the final adjustments. The recipe changes by Amp and Preset, as many of the parameters (particularly the Gain and Level for some of the FX) have a significant impact on the overall sound and SPL.

Another aspect to consider is that when creating or editing Presets on the Amp and a Modeled Amp is selected from the Amp menu (Amp Button -> Rotate Data Wheel) the Amp model that comes in from the Amp Menu always has the default factory parameter settings -- not a user's preferred settings! This is also the case with any of the FX. Until I discovered the REMUDA App, this start from scratch workflow was somewhat of a PITA! Fortunately, REMUDA remembers your preferred settings for the Amps and FX. This makes things quite a bit easier, as your dialed in parameters for each Amp and FX are already there pre-set when you retrieve an Amp or FX from the respective Menu while editing or creating a Preset using REMUDA. When doing the same thing on the Amp or in FUSE, you are always starting from scratch every time you change the selected Amp or FX in a Preset -- even after you Save a duplicate (of an existing) Preset to another memory slot using the Mustang or FUSE.
