hello everyone, the master volume pot is very noisy, normally with a old or dirty pot on a guitar i'll first squirt some contact cleaner and if that doesn't work just install a new one, however, on these new fangled amps things are quite different.
is there a way i can get to the pot to clean it or are new pots available?
thanks

The Master Volume control is simply a rotary potentiometer. An electronic contact cleaner may be useful. The Mustang's electronics deck may be removed from the cabinet by carefully removing the supporting screws and supporting the deck as it is gently removed.

There are photos in other threads here on the Forums regarding dissasembly and removal of the Mustangs' electronics deck for repairs and mods. Browse through the pages of Mustang threads to find them or try the search tool.

Btw, what model and version Mustang do you have? How long have you had it? Has it been used in or exposed to a smoky, dusty, or humid environment?

thank you for replying, the amp is a mustang 1, i bought it new summer before last, i don't know the exact date i would have to look it up on the fender website where i registered it. the amp never leaves the house, i got it because i needed something small for the house, i own an old twin and a hot rod deville i use for work.
you said there are photos of people taking it apart to get to the electronics deck (i never heard of a deck before). would you please point me to where they are? i do most of the maintenance on the other two amps myself (mostly tubes and bias). being fenders they rarely need to be repaired. i would however, like to do a mod on the deville, there are a couple things that bug me. again, thanks for your help.

Electronics deck is another phrase for the electronics chassis and the boards. This phrase is also used in the broadcast and amateur radio fields, etc.

The photos are in the Mustangs' Forums. You'll need to look for these exploded or internal chassis and circuit board photos in the title of the thread or in the body of the posts. The later being much easier using the search tool. It has been many months since I last viewed them. You may also want to Google the Mustang Wiki for any links to internal photos there. Do not recall if the photos were of the Mustang 1. Nonetheless, any images may give you a look at the orientation of the Master Volume pot on the board to get an idea of access to spray it with cleaner or replace it.

thanks again, i have figured out how to get to the pot and sprayed some contact cleaner and it sort of helped, however, i really need to replace the pot. looking at it, it's nothing like the pots in guitars which i change all the time. do you think this is something that can be changed? i ask because with modern stuff is assembled by robots run by computers. i would be interested in your thoughts.

Not being familar with the nature of that exact Pot's design, I'm unable to be of much more assistance. I would be very surprised if it is a proprietary design unit. The trick will be finding a new replacement component.

You might want to contact several of Fender's Authorized Service centers to see if any of them might be facilitating.

Another alternative would be cannibalizing the part from another used Mustang.
