I have a Mustang IV and I see that the Mustang V head is on sale and was wondering what would be the purpose of having an amp head. Is there any reason? And would a Mustang V head work with a Mustang IV. Sorry if this is a very newbie question but I am a newbie. :D

it's all in what you wish to lug around I guess. Obviously combo's are a lot easier to move/setup/tear down.

the Mustang V cab is a 4x12, (it's a stereo cab designed for the MV). I've had 4x12 cabs before, when I was younger, much younger and had people that would help me move crap. Now I'm knocking on 59 and the last thing I want to do is hump a 4x12 cab around, the other problem I have is I know that it would not fit in my car.

The MIV slides right in my back seat, and I don't need mules to move it.

Not with out modifications to the M4 speaker wiring, which Fender will remind you pretty quickly voids the warranty. I'm not sure why you would do this in the first place.

Amp heads are teriffic for powering Speaker Cabs, Monitor Speakers, feeding directly into DAW's, Consoles, and PAs. Due to the absence of speakers and smaller cabinet, heads are far more compact and lighter than an equivalently powered combo amp.

The Mustang V head is 20 pounds lighter than the Mustang IV. They share the same electronics deck, UI, controls, Presets, and Accessories . The exception is the Mustang V head has a pair of 1/4" powered 75 watts 8 ohm Left and Right speaker output jacks. These could be connected to Full Range Flat Response (FRFR) monitors positioned several feet apart for a very full and wide sound field that emphasizes the amp's stereo FX.

There is no direct Fender designed method to use the MV to feed the spkrs in the MIV's cabinet. You could connect the MV's FX Loop Send to MIV's FX Loop Return or Instrument Input, but this would not accomplish much more than the ability to combine FXs and Presets from each amp.

If you're planning on playing through headphones at your DAW or using desktop or near field monitor speakers and want desktop physical access to the Mustang's UI the MV can be useful especially if you feel your MIV is too large.

Without the cost of a speaker cabinet, the Mustang V head is a great value!
