Why not? The Celestion is a better speaker and it won't cost any money? 100%  100%  [ 2 ]
No, The "Special Design" is a much better speaker! 0%  0%  [ 0 ]
I only use tube amps so my opinion is moot! 0%  0%  [ 0 ]

I'm okay with my Mustang II V2 as it currently sits. I use it almost exclusively with the headphones for evening practice, so normally I wouldn't worry about the quality of the speaker currently in it, but...

I upgraded the speaker in my Tweed Hot Rod Deluxe cabinet and now I have a spare Celestion G12P-80 sitting on a shelf.

I know the G12P-80's are used in the Mustang IV amp and the Super Champ X2 SC112 cabinet so they are modelling amp compatible.

Is the Celestion G12P-80 a remarkably better speaker than the Fender "Special Design" that it's worth the effort to put it in the II/V2? Any fans of the Fender "Special Design" speaker willing to step up and let me know why it's a keeper and that I shouldn't bother replacing it?

I think the "Special Design" is marketing hype.

the MIII does have a better speaker when compared to the II..

I'd do it, what can it harm?

Agreed. If you have it lying around, just try it out.

There are 11 screws to take off just the back off of the amp (Closed Design). Realize that some of them might be holding an internal part or two. Seems excessive for that little guy but I am with the others, cannot hurt to give it a try if the speaker will fit in depth, holes and size. Might void warranty somehow.

Might as well give it a try to hear the results.

Do post back your findings.

I pulled out the stock speaker and tried the Seventy 80. I found a marked difference.

First off, the Special Design speaker kind of has a Celestion knock off vibe to it. The magnet is somewhat smaller and I assume it must be in the 40 W range. One of the speaker jacks is smaller than standard so I rigged up a temporary connection. I bolted on a ground wire to be on the safe side and connected it to the amp chassis where the original had been.

The Seventy 80 performed better right across the spectrum: the bass sounded tighter/firmer at low volume on some settings and was an improvement over the Special Design speaker. The Celestion seemed to be a lot more responsive to the amp settings for the mids than the original and it mimicked more closely what I was hearing with my headphones on. Same with the highs -- and the effects seemed to have a little more presence.

Apart from the mentioned firmer bass responses on a few of the settings, at low volume the difference was not as pronounced, but at higher volume the difference between the 2 loudspeakers was obvious: the Mustang/Celestion match sounded more defined and responsive to the Fuse edits I used.

I like the Mustang for its special features that my tube amps don't have and so any real/imagined shortcomings of the Special Design speaker were never an issue for me. It was primarily a headphone amp. The performance improvements that this Seventy 80 can give definitely opens up my options.

Good to hear the improved results!

I think Sweetwater, last week, had these same Celestion spkrs listed in their weekly email. They were B-Stock and very inexpensive.
