I guess I'm from the old school. I've been used to 1 vol. and maybe 1 master vol.
I can see the need for both especially if you have a 2 channel amp.

Question is, beside volume, master volume, why do I need a gain control? Seems like a third way to adjust overall volume.

Thx in advance,
Bill

In most amp designs, the Gain control adjusts the drive level feeding the PreAmp.

This is why increasing the Gain (on many Amps) results in increased distortion, breakup, dirt, etc., based on the particular amp's design. Increasing the Gain, typically also results in some increase of the signal level leaving the PreAmp to the main amp stage(s), and is why, most often, there is also an increase in volume as the Gain is increased.

Not all amp designs respond in the same way!

In the Mustangs there are as many as 17 Amp models, and they do not all respond identically! Even those based on Fender models differ. And, some have additional Volume (signal level controls) in the Advanced Amp settings (press Amp button 2x).

Thanks MusicLaw. That does make sense to me. I was wondering why I was getting a slightly muddied sound as I played with the 3 so called vol. controls.

What did you mean by pressing the amp button twice? Is this in the Fender fuse software?

You're quite welcome.

The Mustang I/II Amps have a differernt Control Panel Interface than the III/IV/V. On the higher model units, accessing the Advanced Amp features is via a double tap of the Amp Button, and the virtual knobs appear on the LCD Display. From there, the Data Wheel allows selecting the desired virtual knob and allows adjusting the selected parameter. The Mustang I/II do not provide this same capability. You would need to use FUSE or REMUDA (Android).
