So my girlfriend gave me a Presonus AudioBox so I can record vocals and acoustic guitar, but I really want to also record directly out of my Mustang III. Has anyone gone this route? Some posts say I need a Direct Box to knock down the signal from the line out before connecting to the AudioBox. Is this really true or can I just dial down the level? Also, if I need the Direct Box, does it really matter what one I get? GC has used cheapies for $10. Would they be ok?

Currently I'm using a crappy Tascam recorder to do my actual recordings and then dumping the files on my PC for processing in Reaper, but it'd be really handy if I sometimes just dumped the audio directly into my PC.

Help appreciated!

Thanks!!!

PS Everything I've read states that the USB out of the Mustang gives substandard audio when just going through a lowend computer (like I have). Has there been any progress fixing this?

In my standard workflow, I start with the guitar track so I don't think latency will be a problem when I'm laying down subsequent tracks through the AudioBox (currently I've been doing this with my Tascam DP-006).

Anyway, I'm a complete noob with this stuff, so any advice is appreciated!

Current gear: Mustang III v2, Presonus AudioBox, Tascam DP-006 digital recorder, Sennheiser e385 mic for vocals and 2 Digital Reference DRI100 mics for instruments.

I'm pretty much flat broke at the moment so have to work with what I have.

Again, all help appreciated!

The Mustang IIIv2 already has XLR outputs. Just connect them (or one of them if mono is enough) to the Presonus. No need for a seperate DI box.

The manual for the Presonus AudioBox USB says that it's not designed for line level input -- says it will be distorted and risk damaging the box. Some people online suggest that it works ok. Maybe I'll just try it out. Seems like it's the wrong interface, but that's what I have and can't exchange it.

Here's what Presonus support has on the subject: http://support.presonus.com/entries/215 ... -or-22VSL-

I connect mine via XLR to the microphone input of a mixing console all the time. Just turn down the Line Out Boost on the Mustang (in the Util menu) and the gain on the Presonus and you should be fine.

Ok, cool! How low do you turn down the Line Out Boost? What about the amp model Volume? I still don't get why the amp model volume affects Line Out volume and the Master doesn't.

Thanks!

I don't remember exactly, maybe 15% or something like that.

I levelled my presets around 6-ish.

That's actually quite good because you can regulate your amp "monitor" volume without ruining the mixer balance for the sound man.

One last question. You say you use the microphone input on the AudioBox. Wonder why this and not the instrument (1/4" jack)? Different preamps? If the phantom power button was accidently turned on, would it destroy the Mustang?

Thanks!!!

Not the AudioBox, a different mixing console (19" in a rack, 24 channels).

Because all line inputs were already used.

It shouldn't, but I'm not 100% sure. I trust my sound engineer not to.

But sorry, I feel I misled you by talking about microphone inputs. Your AudioBox has two "instrument" inputs. Just get a XLR-to-1/4" cable and plug the Mustang in, you'll be fine.

Hahaha! Since I'm the closest thing to a "sound engineer" sitting in my bedroom/studio, I guess that falls on me!

Appreciate the help!

I have the XLR to 1/4" jacks so I'll play around with these. Worst comes to worst, a $20 box isn't a big deal to try down the road.
