The EXP1 has two different modes to control volume, it seems.

1 - Volume mode behaviour: Volume
2 - Expression mode behaviour: Amplifier, with parameter VOL

What's the difference (in sound or use) between these two (if any)?

The EXP-1's most capable and varied features are accessed via Expression (Red LED) Mode.

There is nothing wrong using Expresssion Mode configured for Amp -> Vol. Doing so accomplishes essentially the same thing as Volume (Green LED) Mode. If you want to assure that the Pedal's effect will always be Volume this is the way to go.

Also be sure to resave your Preset(s) so that the Pedal's status will be saved with the desired Preset(s).

The EXP-1 is a teriffic option for the Mustang Amps! The more I explore what it can do, the more impressed I am with its capabilities.

Just wanted to add, the default for any preset is 'volume pedal'.

Switching to Expression Mode will give you a few additional options, such as setting the heal and toe volumes to something other than off and full volume. I have done this in the past to basically make a "boost" pedal - by setting the toe to full volume and the heal to maybe 90% volume. So you leave the pedal in the heal position and then when you want a boost, go to the toe position.

Hi guys just got my mustang one, and now see that I need a exp1 pedal, I have a four button footswitch with it too, but I see where it says that's where to connect the exp1. Can you use exp1 and 4 button fs at the same time , I'm guessing there is a tru jack on exp1. Thanks

Your post states that you have a "mustang one".

The Fender Mustang 4 Button Footswitch, and Fender's EXP-1 Expression and Volume Pedal will not work with a Fender Mustang I nor Fender Mustang II! The peripherals work wonderfully with the Fender Mustang III/IV/V!

Simply connect the Fender EXP-1 Expression and Volume Pedal to the Amp's 4 Button Footswith jack. Calibrate the Pedal to the Amp following the instructions in the User Guide. Once you have done so, then connect the 4 Button Footswitch to the EXP-1 Pedal. Configure the 4 Button Footswitch's mode as desired via the Amp's Menu Button options. If you do a Factory Reset on the Amp, you will need to recalibrate the EXP-1 to the Amp (and the 4 Button Fsw must be disconnected to accomplish recalibrating the Pedal to the Amp).
