I'm getting ready to fire up the Fuse software and was wondering if I can use a longer USB cable?

Best way to find out is to try it.

Worst case: it doesn't work.

You can also easily loop the cable once or twice through an pair of inexpensive ferrite chokes, one at each end. This helps reduce and eliminate stray RF that might make its way into a longer USB cable.

Also try to use a direct USB buss connection (port) rather than a remote USB hub. If you do use a USB hub, a powered (rather than passive) Hub often solves low voltage and signal attenuation problems.

Hi Strataholic,
MusicLaw has good advice...I'm using 3 USB cables linked together for a total length of about 4m (Canadian speak for ~13 ft :D ) I'm not using any ferrite chokes, but am plugging directly into a USB port on my second monitor attached to my laptop. The monitor has a USB cable plugged directly into the laptop and I have no problems with this connection whatsoever.
hth,
Alex

It's all about what extent of RF may be floating around your immediate area. For example, I just replaced our Kitchen Ceiling Lighting (Recessed Can Lights) w/ several low power draw LED replacement units. These I now discovered are horribly noisy. Now our backyard FM Receiver (for our outdoor stereo system) has terrible line noise when these lights are on! I'll need to get a few bigger chokes....

So true. This is why I'm considering lining my hats with aluminium foil
Sorry, couldn't resist :)
Cheers,
Alex

I actually ended up connecting with the supplied cable because I really like the tuner so it's in front of me on the floor under the computer.

I quite sure that one of the members of The Mothers Of Invention lined a football helmet with aluminum foil and wore it everywhere. It was "to keep out errant energy waves" or something like that! 8)

Exactly! Others believe that it keeps aliens (or anyone, for that matter) from reading their minds. I believe that it makes your head sweaty
Cheers!

Rumor has it that Hendrix used to chew tin foil... not sure why. Let's hope he didn't have any metallic fillings!!

The total length of all USB devices on the same controller bus should not exceed 5m (16'5"). If any of the devices is low speed, the total should not exceed 3m (9'10"). Using a powered hub won't change that (unless the HUB is also an XHCI controller).
Keyboards and mice are usually low speed devices, so try to plug those in to ports that's far away from ones you need a long cable for.

That said, you can often get away with greater length as long as none of the devices are timing critical. For controlling an amp, you likely won't have much problem, but for ASIO, don't expect long cables to work reliably.

How did you hook them together? Are there readily available connectors for this? Radio Shack? The one I have is probably about two feet too short so I need to either splice or find a longer one.

Hi Matonanjin,
Sorry for the delay in replying, I've been away.
I can't remember where I got my male to female usb cable. It is a logitech, so it must have come with some Logitech mouse or keyboard. You may be able to get a male to female cord from Radio Shack. We don't have Radio Shack in Canada any more. The parent company (Radio Shack) essentially bankrupted the Canadian stores to keep the faltering US operation afloat a few years back. You could also check out computer supply stores.
Good luck,
Alex
