If you're a Netbook user who can't get to the bottom of the Fuse screen because your display is locked to a maximum resolution of 1024x600, then read on, this is for you.

Most Netbooks don't allow you to select anything above the native 1024x600 display resolution. If you look at your Display Settings in the Graphics Properties, there is no listing for the standard 1024x768. This is probably because when 1024x768 is displayed on a 1024x600 display, the content appears to be stretched slightly from side to side. It’s sort of like squeezing a balloon between your hands, compressing the volume vertically, causes the sides to bulge out. I wouldn't want this as my default display, but to get to the bottom of the screen when needed, it sure would be a handy option. That's what this post is about: Giving you the option to select 1024x768 when needed.

After some on-line searching, I found a solution that works. It involves using the Windows utility "RegEdit" to hack the Windows Registry. (If this sounds like a foreign language to you, have someone who understands this do it for you, because changing the wrong value in the Windows Registry can totally brick you installation. I am intentionally NOT going to get into a detailed discussion of how this is done, because if you don’t know how to use RegEit, you shouldn’t be messing around in your Registry!)

The process is relatively simple, involving changing the ValueData of only one DWORD, "Display1_DownScalingSupported". The default ValueData is "0", which prevents the display adaptor output from being scaled down to fit onto the attached display. Changing this ValueData to "1" allows this, and will add the 1024x768 option to your Display Settings. Depending on your particular installation, there may be multiple occurrence of this DWORD in your Registry. Use the RegEdit "Find Next" function to make sure you get them all.

After making the changes and re-booting your Netbook, you will see the slightly distorted display I mentioned above. Start Fuse, and you will see the entire screen laid out before you in all its glory. When you want to go back to the original display, bring up your Display Settings and you'll find the old 1024x600 listed just above the current setting of 1024x768.

Here's a link to a YouTube Tutorial that goes through the process:

Remember, if you have ANY doubts about doing this, STOP! Have a knowledgeable friend do it for you. I found this to be a simple fix, but then again I’ve been doing this sort of thing for a LONG time. I hope this brings some relief to my fellow Netbook users.

Enjoy.
