Loren,

While I'm eternally optimistic that FUSE will get better, I read this today:

http://www.electronista.com/articles/11/12/09/plug.in.expected.to.be.discontinued/

If this is true and Silverlight it going to be discontinued, what's the roadmap for FUSE? Any chance that Fender will Open Source the amp's API and release the code to the community? I'd feel a lot more optimistic about being able to overcome FUSE's shortcomings if this were the case.

If not, then what's the plan for the future of FUSE, given that Silverlight is a dead platform?

Regards,

While this is the last "major" update, Microsoft will still be supporting Silverlight out to 2021 so I wouldn't expect to see Fender scramble to find another platform any time soon.

There are some issues with this.

1. Fender amps have this habit of lasting a while. I can't imagine that anyone would be pleased with having reduced functionality on their amps in 10 years time. Yes, you'll still be able to save presets, but the facility with which many of us use our Mustangs relies on this functionality. This is a shining example of what tying your products to proprietary platforms controlled by other companies will yield.

2. "Supporting" isn't the same as "maturing". For software to be able to live, it must mature. Witness open standards like HTML (21 years and counting), Ethernet (28 years and counting) that allow the products based on them to mature.

3. It seems to me that publishing the file format and working with the Horse Tamer crowd to build an open front-end (Java maybe? Or heck, maybe even C) would be a step towards preserving the utility of these amps and maybe even fixing the silly UI mistakes.

In brief, make great amps and let us build better software.

I wouldn't necessarily call SL a dead platform. MS is dedicated to supporting it for almost ten years. Either way, although SL is necessary to run any recent version of Fender FUSE, the program itself isn't totally dependent upon it. FUSE didn't run on SL until v. 2.0

Heck, not just Silverlight is a dying platform... Microsoft and its crummy Windows software is dying as well. I wish Fender would get with programming Fuse to be fully compatible with the Mac OSX Lion! The Apple software WORKS... now if we can just get Fuse to do the same. I liked the comment about Linux. Since both Linux and Apple's OSX operating systems work on the Unix platform... that's two stable platforms against one giant clustered mess called Windows. It's hard to believe so many people program for a platform like Windows that's designed to fail. Dert-da-derrr!

10 years is a long time for a low end budget amp to last, I think the ones you are thinking of are the older amps with cabinets made of real wood and higher quality electronics. Don't get me wrong I love the Mustang line, great bang for the buck but I really don't expect to still have my Mustang III in 10 years.

How would you have reduced functionality? Even if Fender never made another change from now to 10 years from now you would still have the same functionality you have now.

Personally I don't see Fender continuing the Mustang line for any where near another 10 years. Could be this is as mature as it is going to get. Keep in mind the Mustang is a low cost, entry level, budget amp.

Would be nice but Fuse isn't an open source project, doubt we will see it become one.

I expect my amp to last 10 years, my 30W Fender Switcher (with buzzing bee distortion) practice amp which got for Christmas 22 years ago still works.

Given the state of Europe, USA and general environmental pilaging I don't want to get involved in buying new gear every 2 years. It's a waste, and anyway expect by the time I'm 65 I'll end up having to go to Botswana to work in a factory for some Chinese owned company which has set up base in the newly concreted over Okavango delta.

Happy days.

Me.
