I really enjoy having so many different amplifier types available.

However...

I'm not noticing so much of a difference between the "British '70s" and the "British '80s". Perhaps it is because I've never owned a Marshall...only Ampegs and Fenders. I don't know enough about them to notice one from the other.

Can some of you with more experience (real or virtual) let me know some background info or perhaps even some settings to bring out the best of each?

Thanks...

To my ear the 70's version sounds a bit thinner and maybe a bit 'colder', although of course you can play with different cabinet settings and EQ to change the tone of both.

I use the 80's Marshall as the basis for an AC/DC type rock sound, with high gain but still quite 'clean' and undistorted - there are some pretty good 'AC/DC' and 'Aussie Rock' presets in the Fuse online library - and the 70's Marshall as the basis for a fuzzed 'Free/Allright Now' type tone.

Like you, I've never owned a real Marshall but those settings/tones seem to suit the two different Marshall vintages.

Maybe any real Marshall devotees listening in can advise ?

I've looked into this matter and here's what I've been able to come up with.

The "unnamed" amp models listed in Fender Fuse for the Fender Mustang line of amps are as follows:

British '60s = VOX AC30
British '70s = Marshall Major (a.k.a. "The Pig")
British '80s = Marshall JCM800 (awesome!)
American '90s = Mesa Boogie Rectifier
Metal 2000 = Peavey 6505

They won't be perfectly exact...because they aren't the original amps, but they're pretty darn close as far as I can tell. Obviously, Fender couldn't list these names because of copyright laws and what-not.

I have a Marshall JVM410H and I can get the JCM800 tones from my JVM Crunch channel, Orange setting (2 gain stages). If I add the "overdrive" stomp effect in Fuse, it sounds like my JVM Crunch channel, Red setting (3 gain stages).

Other posts I have seen identify the "British 70's" as a Marshall "Plexi." Not being a Marshall man, I don't now if that is different from the "Pig" identified by another poster.

I do agree that the 80's model is bigger and bolder, but you can get some nice sounds out of the 70's model with enough tweaking.

Yeah, I've seen that a lot here as well (after I made the post). I've never actually heard what the Plexi or the Major sound like, so I couldn't really decide which one it is. But who cares? We didn't pay $2,500US per amp for these. LOL
