Hi All,
I recently purchased a Mustang III amplifier and I am anxious to install the Fuse and Ableton Live SW and connect a PC. I am also in the process of shopping for a new notebook and wanted to know if the forum has inputs on key features I should look for to get the most of digital effects and recording. I have at least decided that it will be a Windows7 PC - I need for work - but have flexibility in the other options. Any good advice?

Thanks!

I don't know how far your ambitions go, but to get the most out of recording audio on a PC you should really have a second drive for which to stream the recorded audio. Think of it in terms of the first drive (that holds the OS and programs) as being a mixer and the second drive as being the tape. Otherwise, the single drive will have to handle running the programs and handle the streaming audio. This will deplete resources rapidly.

Therefore, I suggest that you get a second harddisk and a harddisk docking station. Here's one such docking station but you may want to shop around for the most reliable one in your price range.

The harddisk should have disk speed of at least 7200 rpm and have a good size cache - 32mb is good, 64mb is better.

If you choose to go Firewire for the audio interface, the laptop needs a TI Firewire (1394) Chipset to accept the connection.

That's all I got without babbling on incoherently...

Hello,

If i were to be buying something new, I would go with an I7 processor and least 8Gb or RAM and Windows 7 x64 ...

The requirements for FUSE itself are much lower ...

p90sdude,
Can you elaborate on why I might want to use Firewire for the audio interface?
Thanks!

hi,

Since FW is a lot faster then any other external connections, FW are most used for video / movies recording/ production and so far. Im my mind, this is not neede at all for sound recording, many user here are still using 6 years old computer, and doesnt have any problems.I will only recommand to stop and shut down any other applications while recording.so, if u get a new Laptop......dont worry :-)

Hey Guys,

Firewire, as a protocol, offers more consistent throughput than USB 2.0, which transmits data in bursts as opposed to a constant stream.

A few years back, most external audio interfaces were firewire, especially larger ones that offered 8 to 16 channels of audio input and output at once. Lots of USB interfaces are available now, but most are two to four channel interfaces, which don't require lots of bandwidth, so USB is fine for anyone that doesn't need to record more than four channels at a time. Latency isn't an issue for most of these USB interfaces either.

As far as hard drives are concerned, Firewire is still the way to go if you're going to be playing back 20 + tracks of audio. However, most PC's don't come with firewire ports natively and firewire add-on cards can sometimes be a pain to get working properly. For the most part, USB hard drives are fine. Just make sure, as P90sdude mentioned, to get a hard drive that spins at 7200rpm and record any audio to that drive only.
