@Bob: Thanks very much for the suggestion. Unfortunately, that doesn't appear to be the problem...the Silverlight/OutofBrowser folder has the FUSE installation in it.

My current best guess is that the FUSE installer is incapable of dealing with a "Documents and Settings" folder that does not reside in the Windows root directory. This would be understandable, and ought to be fixable. Whether I'm right, and whether anybody at Fender is working on this issue, who knows? Frustrating.

FWIW, I just installed FUSE 1.1.3 and it starts up without a problem. I suppose that means that the fact that FUSE 2.2.0 won't start is somehow associated with the additional complicated interactions of FUSE with Microsoft Silverlight...?

Okay, I fixed this problem! FUSE 2.2.0 is running on my XP machine.

The fix seems to be that I changed the permissions on my moved "Documents and Settings" folder to allow full access for all users. Silverlight apparently has to have full access in order to let FUSE operate. I did a couple of other things, too, but I believe that the permission changes were what did the trick. I did have to reboot in order to get FUSE to start properly.

Anyway, I wanted to leave this message in case somebody else has a similar problem (unlikely, I know--what sort of dummy moves his "Documents and Settings" folder???).

Oh, I did want to mention that I'm using a USB 2.0 hub (installed in an internal PCI slot). That hasn't been the issue at all, so it IS possible to run FUSE through a USB hub in my experience.
