I just got a Mustang I this week. I needed something small, quiet-when-idle, decent-sounding, and headphone capable. Not really a long list of contenders if all of the above must be met...

The ONLY problem I'm having thus far is settings with a degree of gain/overdrive. I can't seem to dial-out the sound of paper being torn when you increase the grit on models like the 57 Deluxe and the Bassman.

I set one bank to accomodate the pickups of a Tele, the next a Strat, and thirdly a Les Paul. It's very cool to be able to cater to all three. It does seem the Strat is the best companion because of the lesser pickup strength. I've read that pickup matching is really the key to good presets.

Does anyone know a remedy to smooth-out the tone a bit? I've played with sag/bias and of course gain, but I really can't seem to dial-in anything that doesn't cause immediate cringe. Based on the youtubes I've seen, I know the amp is capable of much more than I'm getting at this point.

I also found that when I did my first pass of settings I used my finger to pick/strum. There is a huge difference when you dig-in an actual pick, and it's generally not positive, so it was back to the drawing board, and it's still not quite "there".

Any advice would be appreciated. I'm also trying to be realistic as there aren't too many $99 amps with 8 inch speakers that can do what the Mustang can do... Well worth it for the Twin/DR/PR models alone!

Have you updated to firmware 1.6.0... I swear that made my AMP sound ten times better
and i wasn;t expecting that. Better presets after the upgrade as well...less i'm nutz...note: it will wipe out your currently saved presets...not a biggie for me..I only had 4 saved ..but Now i have none saved ..cause i dont want to over-write any of these 1.6.0 ones :)

Another thing..long as you've dounf 1 or 2 good tones .. the rest is desert ...and yes ..the strum thing gain/overdrive I happen to love ..its like a break-up of real tube amp glory...but within fuse you have so many post-gain OD ..Stomp distortion pedals, etc ...you should be able to find some you love..Super Sonic ..i see nothing wrong with
it.

I did do the firmware upgrade. I didn't use the original version much, so I can't say if I'd be able to notice a difference.

I was able to clean-up my Vox settings to eliminate most of the buzzi-ness. You really do need to tweak everything when you're dialing-in. Messing with the gain alone won't quite get it done.

I'll try over-writing a Marshall with the Super Sonic and see how it goes. I've read that people really enjoy that one the most of the gain-y stuff.

Thanks,
O2

I also use super weak pickups low (ohms) and I keep them really low...to the body...strings always clean/new helps... I noticed muddy sound if I higher my
pickups with any AMP...and Hot (over-wound) pickups never work for me .....
Yeah lots of tweakin should get it in order.. even guitar cords... I cant use
anything but Planet Waves Classic cords...keeps my true guitar sound over
the more expensive shielded cords...even the pick...I have to use Tortex to
keep the sound crispy/chimey...and last but not least string brand...I love
higher end strings like Elixir 12102 Nanoweb, D'addario EXP115, DR Black
Beauties...for cheaper brands..i'll go with Fender 150M Pure Nickel, Darco
Nickel Wound, GHS Nickel Rockers or Burnished Nickel... Sometimes just
throwing on a new set of strings cures my sound issues...i bust strings
like crazy...but i know some ppl who hardly bend and have the same strings
on for over yr..I cant do that ..even if i dont luckily dont break a string..
i have to change them at minimum monthly.. all depends on the sound
were going for i guess.
