I get the impression that there is a similar software called TONE for some of the newer amps. If this is right which is better Fuse or Tone, and is the difference good enough to use it as a factor for which new amp to buy? Also, how can I find which amps use Fuse and which use Tone? And does Tone only work on iphone, or does it also work on ipad andor pc?

Thanks

Hi, Tone is an app for controlling the GT40, GT100 and GT200 amps,
wirelessly, from android and iOS devices, but is not available
for mac/windows/linux based computers.

The android version was flawed and incomplete when released,
but Fender have made significant improvements using firmware updates,
with more still to come, for both iOS and Android.

FUSE is a full featured computer based interface for all the older
Mustang series amps, and shows the modeled gear available on them
visually, drawing pedals, amps and racks, and allowing their placement
in various orders, depending on what limitations exist on a given gear model.
In use, you can create great effects chains with FUSE, and if you make
a FUSE account, (not your Fender forum account) you can access
an online trove of rated presets, and contribute as desired.

If you are a MOTU on a phone/tablet, and enjoy touch interface editing,
you'll likely get on with Tone, but assume you'll run into some issues,
from what you might expect. Keep in mind that the GT's on-amp interface
is good enough out of the box, to easily make and edit sounds.
The shear number of the gear models, is more daunting than placing
them in the order you like, and then naming the new preset.
Use it for 20 minutes, three days in a row, and you'll know your way around.

If you are used to editing by computer mouse,
and dread the thought of fiddliness, there are bargains to be had
when shopping for older Mustangs, and great sounds are there
for those who dig in and maximise the FUSE interface.
There are some bugs, and the windows installer provides and requires
both Silverlight and .net-framework, so uninstalling any existing versions
before installing FUSE might be wise, keep track of the .net installs you remove,
as Msoft allows multiple versions, and some softwares demand their particular one.

If you want the better dsp and modeling of the newer GT series,
but won't plan on using Tone/phone/tablet, you can simply shrug it off
and enjoy the fine sounding capabilities of the GT amps.

There is an app for the older Mustangs called Remuda, that allows using
some wireless devices with the V1 and 2 Mustangs, and it gets good reviews.
Food for thought.

If you'll be playing at home at some volume, keep in mind that
the GT40 and GT200 have stereo speakers, (not just two mono speakers)
and may not sound as expected at first, compared to the GT100 with typical
mono one-speaker cab, and they all will sound better after 30 hours of sound
breaks in the speakers.

Really no bad options here, and if you'll mainly be on headphones/recording,
you can likely score a used GT40 and Mustang 1 V1 for under $300,
and have both scenarios well covered.
Cheers

Thank you so much for your detailed response.
So, if I understand correctly, only the mustang amps have editing software that can be used to create and save presets?

The GT series uses the Tone app (on android/iOS devices) for creating, editing,
and saving presets. And of course the on-amp LED screen and controls can do that.

The Mustang series uses FUSE on Mac or Windows computers, Remuda on android devices,
and 'Plug' for linux based computers for creating, editing, and saving presets.

The Mustang III IV and V each have an LED screen, and can access all parameters
without software, and have 100 presets on the main dial.

The Mustang 1 and 2 have 24 presets on the main dial, and can only access modulations
like phaser, tremolo, and reverb, using the on-amp controls.
Any deeper editing requires using FUSE.

The other note is that there are original Version One Mustangs,
and newer version Two Mustangs, the newer ones have a few more amp models
and effects, and look slightly different.
Cheers

According to the fender website the superchamp also uses fuse. But apparently it cannot download the presets so must be kept plugged into a pc.

The Super Champ X2 does use Fuse. The presets can be downloaded and saved in the amp. The amp can store 16 amplifier "voices" and 15 "effects" settings. It's structured a bit different than the Mustang series. Once you have them set up the way you like, you do not have to be plugged into a PC.

Fender G-dec 3 amps can use fuse, google g-dec fuse
and there are some youtubes, announcements, reviews etc

Always wanted a Superchamp X2, but will have to get
that remote country cottage, first :(
Cheers
