Hi gang.

This original topic/post began in the Mustang group. Thought it may be more appropriate here.

I'm looking at all the options for using Windows 10 (using Parallels software) particularly as it relates to the Mustang amp series and Fuse. I'm also interested in the use of Amplitube, Ableton, and Cubase with relationship with Windows 10 (using Parallels software). I'd like to know if my existing external hard drives optimized for Windows and, perhaps, a CD/DVD writer/reader might work in the same fashion given proper drivers and USB connection.

I realize this is a tall order and other forums and such can answer some of these questions, so my brief question is if the Mustangs and Fuse would work with Mac and Windows using the Parallels Desktop method. Any of your experience regarding the usage of similar setup as mentioned will be appreciated. Working DAWs that you use and plug-ins in this case are of interest too should you find it to be of help.

Note: I have a robust soon to be obsolete Windows Vista desktop doing the job now; but, a change to a particular digital mixer may call Apple into play, and using Windows 10 on the same machine will be a definite advantage in this case.
TIA.

FSB

Yeah, it is Strings. I want to continue with some plugins in my possession, and yet I want some flexibility as I haven't written in stone what I need (acoustic life was easier, but hey, where's the fun in taking the easy road?), and where I'm going. I prefer not to close the door.

It's true that many of the plugins work in Mac and Windows, but digital has been and probably will continue to be the chicken and the egg where maturity (unlike analogue) is off in the distance long after I'm gone.

So software is prone to change, and the better software and formats do not always win out. Besides, time spent to ride the ever changing learning curve sucks up playing time. That's where a visit to a full blown studio with all the toys and someone else doing the homework comes into play. Exceptions are certainly welcome, however.

As for hardware . . . that's a hornets' nest, especially with the constant upgrades and obsolescence, and most of us have felt that sting or will. So here I am still using hard copies for backup, with a recent 2 track analog mixer likely to be replaced by a multi-track digital mixer that can work remotely or at the board (helpful, especially with the traps at a distance), and a new computer system that won't (hopefully) compromise my decision for a DAW for at least a reasonable period.

Yeah, right. Oh, well one can hope, huh?

Cheers!

I have worked in pro studios where gear change was a common expense as a cost of doing business. Here at home, as I look at my worn decades old multitrack reel deck, that doesn't apply.

Well for the apparent lack of anyone who on the forum who has actually has tried this config, I'll say this....

Parallels Desktop for Mac is designed to do what you want to do. I absolutely think this config could work. The question is how much work/time/money it will take.

Maybe it would work seamlessly from the get-go. Maybe you'd have problems and have to figure out the solution. Support will be hard to come by because you are dealing with 4 products made by 4 different companies and trying to get them to work together.

If you have the time and your system is new enough that you are comfortable "playing around" with it - go for it! Worst that could happen is it doesn't work out and you revert to a more typical config.

Thanks, for your take on the matter. All valid points.

Jumping in is probably the way to go. There are at this time too many hurdles perceived to jump, and expense is definitely a consideration, but probably no more, and maybe even less, than running multiple hardware. The biggest downside I see with the said variety of options is the management - something that comes in the digital age regardless.

I've worked with $100,000 fully programmable gear that ran on DOS. Life was good before multiple upgrades, unlimited sophisticated security risks, and online changes, etc. However, that's apples to oranges and today is good also, just a little busier.

Mustang has it right with hands on operational setup always available at the amp even without a computer. I might let my digital mixer choice dictate a similar decision. I've yet to try it hands on, and it comes as a deal as offered by an associate. It may or may not come to fruition, there's no hurry and newer expected version OSs are coming out with some definite changes . . . still, the homework needs to be done.

I threw this software/hardware consideration out there on the slim chance that someone may have or are thinking of a similar setup. I know - I'm weird, but I'm hoping that will transfer to me being a musical genius. Yeah, right - in my next life.
Cheers!

That's only the case for Mustang III/IV/V - for Mustang I/II/Floor/Mini, a lot of the functionality isn't directly available and has to be set through Fuse (or a 3rd party equivalent).

Good point, arthl. Thanks, for pointing that out.

I found a difference when I took a trip out West and played with a buddy's Mustang 1 and compared it with my IV which I'm happy with. Still both amps are pretty good for the price IMHO. There's always room for improvement at some expense or compromise, however.

I have version 1 with no noticeable fizz. I didn't make the leap to version 2 because I was waiting for a possible 3rd version.
