Ok, so i see a lot of concern from users regarding Fenders support for fuse etc. and i had a few ideas i wanted to try in regards to using standard midi controllers to control the Fender Mustang amp series (i.e. i own a Line 6 FBV Express pedal and would be nice to use that for Wah/Volume/Parameter changes).

I was also thinking about adding in some kind of LFO-like modulation for parameters, that could be used for automatically modulating different controls, and similar elements to that, i.e. having a single expression movement affecting different parameters in ratio to one another (i.e. as you increase the delay depth you could have the delay speed change by half of that movement etc.) - This amp has so many possibilities i would really like to untap.

I appreciate that's not everyones cup of tea, but depending on how i get on with the USB communications implementation i may have a go at creating a Fuse alternative that doesn't rely on silverlight, let's you preview patches etc. and all that good stuff that i've seen other users wanting from Fender.

I figure that once i've got the core communications sorted, the rest will just be a case of progression from that.

So, basically, i'm doing this for myself but if anyone's interested, or anyone who's tried stuff like this previously it would be great if you could reach out, and/or if you have any other ideas relating the USB control of the Mustang amps then throw it in here and i'll do what i can.

Right now i will only be looking at OSX, but if possible i will try and port to other platforms (Win/iOS if possible?) if people are interested of course. It may also be possible to be able to control the amp directly from a DAW for patch changes, stomp on/off etc. but these are all just ideas right now, my main focus is to get general midi devices bridging.

Cheers!

I have no app programming skills, but I can wish you the best of luck! It would be quite a feat to accomplish this. I have a G-DEC 3 30, but I'm assuming your app could replace my Fuse app.

Even if that's not possible (for whatever reason), still, here's hoping!

Another non-coder but long time Mac user with an iMac, MacBook Pro and iPad (nah, I'm not an Apple junkie) who agrees that your project sounds interesting. I've done a fair amount of software testing (as a non-IT user) at work and do understand what "alpha" and "beta" mean ... if you get to those stages.

Wouldn't the market for an iOS controller be much larger? Android has Remuda, iOS has none yet.

Hi there

I am a programmer. Been programming for 40 years, been an iOS developer for about 8. I have a few apps in the app store. I've also got on Mac application in the Mac store (been developing Mac apps for a few years).

I also got a bit disillusioned with the FUSE application - especially since it relies on Silverlight. So I have started to write my own. All native Swift OSX code. My application can:

Connect to a Mustang (I have a III V2, but I think my application will work with any Mustang amp).
Get the presets from the amp
I have a display like the Mustang 3, rotatable knobs to move between presets, change volume tone etc
Display the preset settings with graphics like FUSE (pedal and effects with rotatable knobs)
If the user changes the knobs the preset can be saved back to the amp
Search the web for existing presets and load these into the application and then into the amplifier

Most recently I thought it would be great to be able to control this from an iPhone/iPad. So I added Bluetooth support to my application then wrote an iOS Bluetooth app that could connect to the Mac application and get the amplifier and current preset from it. The app can then get the next and previous presets (I've just started the app, and this represents about 4 days of iOS app dev work)

Like you I am doing this for myself in my spare time, but there may be demand for such an app. I'm not sure if it's saleable, because there's a free FUSE application and some of my colours and logos are copied from Fender.

Clearly I have some work to do (saving presets to the computer, creating new presets, adding pedals and effects and adding a graphic display to the iOS app)

The problem with writing an iOS app is that to communicate with the amplifier, it's necessary to use Apple's HID (Human Interface Device) interface. This interface is only available on MacOS, not on iOS. On Android low-level access to devices is possible, but not on iOS.

The solution is to have some other computer (a Mac, a PC or even a Raspberry Pi) that can communicate with the amplifier, but can also take commands from other devices (e.g iPhones) and pass these on to the amplifier. This is not a simple matter, but it's something that I am experimenting with.
