I've had a problem finding a good preset with just a small amount of distortion. The presets on the amp are way to dirty for my taste. Shred is not my thing. Also, are there any recommendations for a distortion pedal that works well with the Mustang II?

Select one of the clean amp emulations, and turn the volume down and the gain up.

I guess not, because shredders tend to use little distortion, not a lot.

Anything that's digital, i.e. is plain distortion in the pedal itself and not a true drive pedal that depends on tube breakup, cause the Mustang has none.
A TC Electronic MojoMojo will set you back around $50 right now at the Sweetwater sale.

Don't get a TubeScreamer or TS clone, because the amp doesn't take it well. You're better off using the built-in overdrive effect through FUSE or Remuda, and setting it at a low drive level.

I found this video by Larry Carlton very useful for finding that 'in between' gain setting:

That was not my experience at all with my TS9 - it sounds like it always does.

Also see this continuation of the Larry Carlton vid by his Best Friend and Tech, Rick Wheeler:

Note this is long and detailed! May be TMI for some.... I'm not too familiar with the MII, but all the principles are applicable to the higher model Mustang MIII, MIV, MV!

For a low gain distortion right on the amp I found this combo to work swimmingly… For my strat with my pickups as heard by my ears.

59 Bassman with Gain between 5-6. Adding the 2x12c cab keeps it nice and clean and nice and round with a tiny bit of dirt depending where you have the Bias. I then added (suggestion by another member which worked very well) the green box with the level about 2 o’clock and gain between 7-9 o’clock depending on how gritty you want it to give it a nice boost. I find this to give me the most pick sensitive dynamics and natural feel/sound of any other preset I’ve tried or created myself. It works well with both my CS69 Neck pickup and SSL5 Bridge pickup an cleans up nice with Volume as well so I have cleans and grit in one preset which is very useful with a mustang II given the limited footswitch capability.

As far as external pedals go, I had the Joyo Vintage Drive (TS Clone) loved it but I returned it since it really didn’t add much with the Greenbox stomp already on the amp. I have a Joy Ultimate Drive and that too works very well. Good for low gain too but I discovered if I crank the gain, it sounds very close to my Rat but much thicker. Been wanting to try the Sweet Baby.

I have not had much luck with the fuzz pedals I’ve tried but I’m still searching…

This is a preset I made with the above recipe and I’ve not gone back to much else after creating this one. I have another variation on my amp with the gain on the Greenbox backed down to about 2 (7 o'clock) for a little bit of a cleaner tone.

Hope that was useful for you.

great video above ... thanks for sharing strings
