I've had my G-DEC for years and its always worked great. But lately when I turn the Data Wheel it skips, doesn't change at all, or it skips ahead through the presets. In any case it's very erratic. Any suggestions? Electrical contact cleaner? Hit it with a hammer?

:-)

Still under warranty? Send it in for repair.
Out of warranty, hit it with a hammer....just joking
Hitting with a hammer is best left to the professionals.

No, it's long out of warranty. What do you think? Ball Pean or Sledge?

That depends on whether you want a surgical strike or the final resolution.....
You could send an email to Fender Support TSL@Fender.com and see if there's anything that they can recommend, but I'd guess that you've already done this by posting here.
I wonder what I'll do when my GDec3-30 packs it in...current thinking is a MustangIII. It has more power than I need since I use my amp mostly for recording, but it has balanced line outs like the GDec, so I can go directly into my recorder.
Sorry I can't be of more help....
Good luck,
Alex

This should do the trick:

I've done it twice on my 2007 G-DEC 15; it'll take an hour or so.

I hope you have this figured out but, in case you're still dealing with it...

I had the same problem with my Cyber Twin. There are 3 knobs that gave me the same issue. I ordered new "pots" for them. The're not really potentiometers. They're encoders. They were easy to find and very affordable. They're a little more difficult to change out than a normal analog pot but not too bad. A fourth knob started giving me trouble just before I took it apart. I changed out the 3 that I had replacements for and, since I had it exposed, I sprayed the fourth. After that, they all worked just fine. It's been 3 or 4 months now and it's still going strong. I have a couple more sitting on a shelf because they're only $7 but I would probably try spraying first.

I have just had the circuit board with the jog wheel on,out today and gave it a good squirt of WD40 switch cleaner. It now works perfectly. Why didn't I do this years ago?

Have you tried useing electrical switch cleaner on the rotary wheel? Worked on mine. Bit of a job to strip down to get to it.

OMG - do NOT use WD40 unless you have water in an electrical component. WD stands for Water Displacement. 40 is the 40th try that worked. PLEASE get some tuner lubricant (like the old TV tuners) - it has components for cleaning the electrical contacts AND lubrication for making everything moves well. Do NOT use any cleaner that does not have the lubricant. I learned this lesson in the 80's trying to fix a volume control on a high powered amp. After squirting the cleaner in the control I started working the control back and forth - well the cleaner removed ALL lubricant and the knob shaft AND collar was aluminum, and it galled the thing rock solid. Had to purchase a new volume control and solder it in.
