I did do a search and read threads regarding G-Dec 3-30 vs Mustang III. My question is in regards to buying a used G-Dec for $79 vs. a new or used M III for $330/$230.

I've been learning for about a year and a half now and taking lessons for almost a year. I love playing along with Blues backing tracks on Youtube. I'd like to learn some Classic Rock but for now, I'm really focused on the blues.

I currently have a Mustang I and frankly, it's just fine for what I do which is exclusively playing at home. But you know how it is gear is fun!

I was thinking the G-Dec might be a good tool to use with my teacher and practicing at home. I also am intrigued by the play along books. I also recently purchased a BOSS BR-600 multi track recorder so I can have fun and sort of track my progress.

So am I wasting my money buying the G-Dec? Thanks in advance.

Hi hamfisted,

It is great that you are enjoying your guitar and lessons.

If you are considering buying a used G-DEC 30, be aware that there are two models (early & late). The early model does not have the SD Card slot, which you need if you plan on a working with the Hal Leonard songbooks:

Original Model

Late Model - Note the SD Card slot in the upper right corner of the amp.

If possible, you want to obtain the original purchase receipt from who ever you buy the amp from. Without the original purchase receipt, there will be no warranty on the amp.

I don't think the Hal Leonard Fender G-Dec Guitar Play-Along Songbook/SDs are available from Fender anymore. I couldn't find any with a search.

I think there were 13 or 14 of the songbooks and cards available. I have eleven of them. You can find some of them available on e-bay. Just do a search for:

Hal Leonard Songbook SD Card

Fender G-DEC 30 sd cards

Hope this helps.

Jerry

Thanks Jerry. The used G-Dec I'm looking at is the later version. It's at GC so I doubt it will have the original receipt...unless it was purchased there possibly. But I'm willing to take a chance for $80 if you think it would be beneficial over my MI

Well, I have no experience with the Mustang amp but have read many good comments on the forum about them.

I'm no expert, but I think $80 for a G-DEC 30 is a good price. There are only about 7 listed on e-bay right now ranging from $100 to $279. There is one for $75 but it is the early model.

If the amp is at a GC store, be sure to check it out and make sure all the buttons and knobs work.

If possible, take a SD card with you that has .mp3 or .wav files to make sure the SD Card slot works. You need to create a folder called, "Audio" on the SD Card and put the .mp3 or .wav files in there for the G-DEC to recognize it.
