I think I'm probably on a loser here, but nothing ventured ...

I recently bought a used G-DEC 15 via ebay here in the UK. The listing said the backing tracks worked fine but that it was untested beyond that. It powers up fine but makes no sound whatsoever; not from the backings, not from my guitar, not from an mp3 player plugged into the aux, nothing from headphones. No response when I try the tuner either, so it doesn't appear to see any input. I took the back off to see if the speaker wires had come adrift in transit, but they're fine. The firmware is v1.02, so is it worth updating or am I on a hiding to nothing and would be better trying to get my money back (seller's not being very helpful ...)? I don't really want to throw (much) good money after bad either by getting it looked at by a professional and am keeping my fingers crossed that it's not a hardware problem; after all there are no moving parts to get damaged ... right?

Any advice gratefully received ...

UPDATE: just updated firmware ... made no difference whatsoever ... run out of ideas :(

UPDATE 2: turns out the tuner DOES work, so at least it's recognising the input. Still don't know what else to try ...

Hi stephe117,

We will be happy to assist. It appears as if you might have purchased a bad unit. You went through the correct steps to help resolve some issues related to the Fender® G-DEC®3 amplifiers, but in your case it seems to be related to hardware, and we would recommend either take the amplifier in for service or see if the seller is willing to take it back. Please let us know if we can assist further.

Thanks for your response F TSL. I'm somewhat loathe to get it serviced without any idea of the extra outlay involved. I'm negotiating with the seller about a return but he's not being too helpful. He claims (though I'm not sure how much credence I attach to it) that the backing tracks worked before shipping, so maybe it is hardware. Surely there are very few (if any?) moving parts though, so I'm thinking that if it DID work before shipping it's got to be something that got dislodged in transit and is easy to re-attach. But what could that be?

Hi stephe117,

We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing difficulties with the seller. Unfortunately, it's hard to troubleshoot this issue without having an authorized service center, take a look at the unit. Please let us know how it goes and if we can assist further.

This is getting odder ...

I reloaded the factory presets via SD card yesterday, apparently to no effect, but I thought I'd have another go this morning and have realised that the backing tracks DO play, but only if BOTH volume knobs (ie band and guitar) are right up, and then only at an extremely low volume. Each knob then independently controls the volume, ie if I turn either to zero the sound disappears.

Then I checked the guitar input: turns out it DOES amplify the guitar, but only very minmally indeed, not even as loud as the band tracks. I had tested it before using a semi-acoustic and couldn't discern the amp's effect over the sound coming from the guitar. When I tried it with a solid I could just about hear it from the amp, but even then I could only be sure by turning the volume knob and hearing the difference.

So ... looks like I'll not be able to return it as 'not as described', but can anyone advise on how to sort out this volume problem?

Also the headphone socket doesn't work, looks damaged ... but that's a minor issue!
