Searched the forums, but came up empty-handed. Does anyone know what the G-DEC 3 Thirty lo res and high res phrase recording bit rates are?

I know that low res will allow 2' 20" of recording versus 35 sec for high res, I'm just curious as to what my G-DEC 3 qualifies as low res (and for high res). 96 kbps for low? 192 for high?

Good question...one to which I don't know the answer. But, the recording times differ by a factor of 4 so 48kbps and 192kbps????
cheers..

Ah, math...is there anything it can't do? ;)

But that got me thinking, Alex...I was trying to recall if I had somehow copied any phrases to my computer. Turns out I did!

The recorded phrases are wav files, and so I simply dragged one into iTunes. It was a 36 sec high res phrase (apparently there is a bonus second ;) ) and it clocked in at...

1411 kbps!

That puts it at the highest level of CD quality.

If, mathematically speaking, we reduce it by a factor of four, then our low res number, rounding under, comes in at 352.

Well, if I get a chance, I'll burn a low res, get access to it, and drag that into iTunes.

Unless the question gets answered before that...

Very good Jeff; nice touch using iTunes for the measurement 8)
So, the high res setting is recording at CD quality (44.1kHz and 16 bit and stereo?) thus the low res is somewhere between AM and FM radio quality. Perhaps the low res is mono...there'd be a factor of 2 savings that way and you'd have double the sampling rate (or bit depth...your choice).
Math is wonderful, but can be a danger in the wrong hands

Thanks, Alex! Funny how an answer can come around in a roundabout way.

I would definitely fall into the "wrong hands" category! and the 3 types: too funny! :D

Ah, the plot thickens...

I managed a little time to record and save a short phrase at low res (I recorded for about one minute, so I'm positive the setting was on low res).

After popping out the SD card and mounting it on my laptop, I dragged a copy over to iTunes, curious as to what the bit rate really was.

1411kbps at 16 bit Stereo.

Um...okay. :?

Hmm. Perhaps I'm forgetting about capturing vs saving. My guess is that Fender captures audio at the selected high or low setting, but when you save it, it gets saved at the highest rate. I would also wager that the high res capture rate is 1411kbps (therefore no upscaling) but that the low res is upscaled to 1411kbps.

Assuming I'm correct, I still don't know what low res is captured at, but it's fun to discuss. :)

Fun indeed! I tried the same tactic; recorded a phrase at hi res and then a separate one at low res and checked the bit rate via windows explorer and darned if they aren't both identical. It's not that I didn't believe you, Jeff, honest
I then checked the bit rates of some of some files I'd recorded at 24 bit depth, both in mono and stereo in the off chance that windows explorer only reports 1411 kbps, but the 24 bit mono track (Zoom, R16) was reported as 1058 kbps and a 24 bit stereo track (CuBase) as 2822 kbps, so windows explorer is reporting properly. <edit> the CuBase recording is actually 32 bits <edit>
I think you're right in that the save function 'upscales' the low res file. Unfortunately, my ears can't discern a difference between the saved hi and low res files - I blame either the quality of my playing or my ears
Time to venture out and de-ice the driveway one more time.

No sweat, Alex, independent verification is good thing! :)

You even took it a step further and checked some other files, excellent! As far as what the actual recorded bit rates are, I'm afraid only Fender will be able to tell us. If I get a chance today, I'll send off an email to Alan and see if he can shed any light on this.

Careful on that ice! (Ours has disappeared around here, thankfully. Still got plenty of snow, however... :x )
