I'm an old player now. My glory days were the '80s. The '90s saw me as a working father with a steady job and no more dreams of fame and fortune. Now I'm back to gigging again. Granted I'm only in small venues but to even be able to turn a buck in LA is a feat in its self. My last amp was made by Yamaha, I forget the model but it was an all tube 75 Watt RMS combo with a parametric EQ and an awesome spring reverb. Thats the last sound I remember of my past.

Come to the present and as I'm just starting off I saw the G-DEC 30 as a solution while I build up my effects board. It is great for what it is no question, but my ears were missing something... the warmth of valve driven power. I recently ran across the specs for a very economical tube preamp called the ART Tube MP Poject Series Tube Microphone/Instrument Preamp *whew! they sure know how to name their products* and decided "What the heck!?" Well it contains a genuine 12AX7 tube inside it's compact cabinet and it has a gain knob that lets you dial in how much you want to drive the tube and let me tell you... you get a REAL screaming tube for half the price of a Tube Screamer! Or if you prefer a clean open signal just back off on the gain and crank the volume for awesome presence. At the end of your effects chain it can act as a boost to compensate for any signal sucking stomp boxes that aren't wired for true bypass. It can be used as a DI, attenuater, and compressor along with being a killer OD. I mean REAL valve rattles at high gain! If you aren't happy with the sound of the G-DEC, check this out! You might sing a different tune.

I got mine at musiciansfriend.com. Mine was through a promotional catalog which offered the USB port option to connect to a PC or Mac for $20.00 off. It ended up being $79.95. Base models start at $39.95 with the USB version normally retailing at $99.95 with several flavors in between. If you consider that new Tube Screamers are running around $100.00 and vintage Tube Screamers from the '80 fetching about $150.00 on eBay, this is a great solution at half the price.

You just install it somewhere between your guitar and your amp like an effect pedal. If you're running external effects, it has different qualities depending on where you put it in your chain. I like my guitar into my Wah Wah pedal and usually run an old Boss DS-1 distortion pedal. I like my preamp at the end of my effects chain so that it can feed a conditioned signal in to my G-DEC. The crunch, the swell and decay of a driven tube is clearly apparent if you drive it hard.

Hey all,

manabu 108 was 100% right on... This is a great solution, it really puts the "tube" in the G DEC 30

Thanks Again

Ok, lil help guys, I also bought the Tube MP Project Series and I'm having a problem. I have it plugged in and the power supply hooked up, but I am getting no sound out of the amp. No lights are lit up on the Tube MP, should there be? I'm fearing that it is broke! Goin from the amp to the INPUT on the back of the unit then the OUTPUT goes to the guitar. Any ideas? Thanks.

If you have a multimeter check out the power supply to the unit.
