What is the limit of how many band track files can be in the G_DEC 3. or if it dependent upon the size of the G-DEC 3 HD what is the max size that it can hold?

I use the SD card it's 16 gigs of memory. You could play a week straight non stop with that.

Hi Jimh54,
The HD on the GDec3 is only 250MB, so it won't hold a lot of songs. I understand that it was designed with a small HD since it has the ability to read and write to SD cards. As bandit11 says, best to use a 8 or 16 GB SD card to store lots of songs in either wav or mp3 format.
hth,
Alex

As mentioned, the 250mb hard drive size limits you capacity to fill it with audio files, depending on their size/type. An SD card will solve that problem. It will hold a lot of MIDI files, however, and it's fun to explore what you can do with the G-DECs MIDI capabilities.
Chances are pretty good that if you can't find an audio file version of a backing track you wish to play, there's probably a MIDI version of it out on the interwebs. You may have to sort through a bunch of crappy sounding ones, or take what you can get and edit it to sound better.
If you've never messed around with MIDI before, having a G-DEC is a good incentive to learn about it. Get yourself a MIDI sequencer/editor program (there's many available, even for free), a MIDI file of a song you want to play, turn off the tracks you don't need (guitars, etc.) and now you have a backing track! You can create your own metronome tracks as well, adding some bass or keyboard sounds, making them a little more interesting to listen to than the common "boop, bip, bip, bip" stuff. :)
Buying an original G-DEC 15 back when they were new is what got me started on educating myself about MIDI.

Great advice, Strat Cat! I'm going to explore midi files more and even (maybe) try creating some of my own. I have 2 questions, if I may:
What MIDI sequencer/editor program do you prefer, and are you still using your G-DEC 15?
cheers,
Alex

HI Alex, I use a Mac, so my experience is in that area. I don't have the old G-DEC 15 any more, as I traded up to the G-DEC 30 after a while. Just a better unit all around, IMHO. When the price dropped on the G-DEC3 Thirty, the old 'DEC 30 was traded in to help pay for that new one.
Regarding MIDI editors, on a Power PC and later an Intel Mac I used something called Easy Beat. The developer stopped working on it years ago, but a stable version of it can be found (along with a serial number) with some creative searching. I like it a lot, mainly because it is "easy" to use. Once I upgraded from OS 10.6 to 10.7, it no longer worked. I can boot back into a 10.6 PPC partition on my HD, however, to open all the files I saved in Easy Beat format while I was working on them, and save them back into MIDI file format. On the new OS my choices are somewhat more complicated. Nowadays I open and edit MIDI files in Reason 4, mainly because I already have the program and use it for other things.

I'm getting the hang of working with MIDI files in Reason well enough that I don't need to look for something simpler to use. That works fine when I don't want to do much else with it. Just save the MIDI file and upload to the DEC. If I want to take it a step farther, all the instrument samples in Reason allow me to trigger real sounds: drums, bass, keyboards and everything else with that little MIDI file. Once I get it sounding good, I can save it as an audio file which makes for a passable backing track.

If you're on a Windows PC or something else, I'm afraid I can't be much help there. I'm sure there's plenty of options for that platform.

Strat Cat,
Thanks for your response...I'll search about for a pc based program. It seems more and more that my next computer should be a Mac, I've been a pc user for so long (remember DOS?) that I automatically buy a pc. My sister has recently purchased a Mac and she really likes it so I should see what all the buzz is about.
Best,
Alex

Hi Guys,

Interesting chat here. To my knowledge, there is not a file size limit for audio files on the Fender G-DEC 3. And as noted here, although we do not officially support SD cards beyond 8GB (class 2 and 4), 16GB cards should be usable. So, in theory, the G-DEC 3 can play back most (mp3 & 16bit wav) audio files without issue.

Cheers,
