Hello All,
Picked up a blues version of the G-DEC 3 Thirty the other day as a late Christmas present to me :-)
I like the amp so far and I'm pretty sure it's exactly what I need to take it to the next level as I do not get a chance to jam with people too often.
Anyways, my question is how do you know what key you are playing in with the backing tracks that DO NOT list the key in the track title. I was able to find the key changing utility but that goes by a number system and is not helpful in determining the key. I found the preset backing track listing for the blues configuration in a pdf format through Fender's site but it does not list more than the track name and title.
The preset notes pdf for the original configuration of presets and backing tracks comes close with the performance notes column but even that's missing key information off of some backing tracks that do not indicate a key in the track title.

I'm all for ear training but it would be nice to have a reference to see if I was correct in my guess.

Thanks,
Rob

That is just what happened to me when I got my g-dec. It was a wonderful problem to have because it forced me to learn position 1 of every key in the pentatonic scale.

I use the blues version too, and if you'll learn the keys on the E string, you'll be able to play pentatonic riffs on your g-dec.

For instance, on the blues version, track 00 is in the key of E. Play position 1 of the Em pentatonic scale on your 12th fret, (the octave of the 1st and 6th string), and voila! You'll be jamming with BB King in no time.

Position 1 is the same shape in every key, so after a while, learn the positions above and below it, then the next, etc, and you'll have it in no time. It's quite satisfying.

Track 02 is also a good example. That is played in the pentatonic position one in the key of A, or Am pentatonic, otherwise known as the fifth fret.

I even cut post-it notes and taped it to my neck at the start.

So, when you play the track and it doesn't mention the key, you just play position one in each key until you find the one that is in the same key.

Thanks for the reply surfaday,

I kind of figured as much :-) I can find the keys I suppose and it will be good ear training to able to pick out the root notes of a tune so I'm not too disappointed. Just would be nice to have a verification if I was right or not.

Happy playing,
Rob

Here is where you can find the keys and chords to most of the tracks in PDF format

notes
Edit, I noticed the keys are listed for the Gdec 3 original, but the others just give a preset number.
