I had a quick question on using MIDI backing tracks with the MIDI input on the GDEC. What is the advantage of doing this rather than just feeding the standard audio out (from my PC sound card) into the aux line input (on the GDEC)?

I got it working through my USB MIDI cable but it was a hassle and I didn't see any advantage. The Media player already handles the conversion from MIDI to an analog signal which can be sent via the GDEC line in.

Am I missing something?

thanks

The only differences would be in the quality of the sound samples in the computer's sound card wavetable synth as opposed to those used on the GDEC. Some lower end cards have some pretty crappy samples.

Also, lower end cards often use a "software synth". This uses the computer's resources rather than memory and samples stored on the card. Not only are the software synth's samples poor quality, they also eat up resources - something you generally don't want to be doing if you are also recording audio on the same computer at the same time.

The GDEC's have a fairly good sounding wavetable but some higher end sound cards sound much better.

p90sdude, thanks for taking the time to reply. What you say about the sound quality makes sense. I'm sure the onboard midi generator would be a much cleaner source. That being said I'm probably ok skipping MIDI altogether and just using the standard input. I'm not doing any recording, and I've had a heck of time getting midi to work properly with the USB-MIDI adapters in Windows 7 anyway (Thanks Microsoft). I did make it work with a WinXP netbook.

I was originally hoping I would be able to control MIDI (backing tracks) playback somewhat from the amplifier control panel, but apparently that functionality is not built into the Gdec Junior.

Oh, well, no worries, its still a great little amp....

My teacher has an older PC that doesn't have a lot of horsepower. So, for him, it was impossible to play a lot of Guitar Pro tunes through his PC. It just couldn't keep up.

By setting Guitar Pro to output MIDI, he could play the tunes through his G-DEC.

If your PC has the horsepower and a decent sound card (or synthsizer like the one that comes with Guitar Pro), it is easier to just use your PC.
