Saw an ad on Craigslist and couldn't resist. Got a Mustang I for the price of 2 pedals I never use anymore because of the GDEC. I got the pedals used so probably broke even in the deal.

I was excited to try the Mustang because Mustang owners seem to really love their amps, and it never hurts to have more amps, right?

Sad to say, and long story short, I was disappointed in the Mustang I. It performed perfectly well and had decent tone, but once you have the backing tracks and SD card slot on the GDEC, everything else falls short.

Not a fair comparison, the Mustang I is more like the GDEC Jr, but this is just my impression. It had great presets though, and if I wasn't comparing it to the GDEC, it was a fun amp.

Someone did a review of the GDEC on Musician's Friend and really trashed it, touting the Mustang instead. Seemed like the guy was just out to malign the GDEC. Now I have first hand experience. Why lug around all the extra CD's or an mp3 player when I can have it all in one? To each his own, of course.

Sold the Mustang I on Craigslist the same day I posted it. Go figure. I had been trying to sell those pedals for months.

Sorry you didn't like the Mustang compared to the G-DEC 3. The MI is only $100 though, so you won't get the same kind of feature set. I"m glad you like the G-DEC 3.

I think it all depends on the guitar, pickups, Room we play in, our power quality, and mood as how we all have different experiences with the same amp.

I had origianlly bought a Mustang 1 and a few days later ,I was in the guitar store messing around with a new G Dec 30, and I went home, packed up the mustang and returned it for the Gdec.

I think it sounds so much better.

Now, I also had a chance to play the Mustang iv which I really liked, but knew it was over kill for me. I think the Mustang ii would of been a closer comparison, but I really like the tones I am getting from my GDEC, and when I want even smoother tones, I hook up my new Samson Media One Monitors via the "line outs" on the Gdec and it really sings. I was really suprised that it sounded as good.

Compared to what? I've got the old G-DEC 30, the new G-DEC 3 Thirty and a Mustang II. I still play through the G-DECs when practicing and find the clean tones superb. I do use the G-DECs more than the Mustang just because of the aforementioned backing track capability.

Interesting. I don't quite know how an amplified sound qualifies as natural, but...
I agree that when I brought my first GDec 3 home I was a bit disappointed, but only with the fuzz tone and overdriven presets. CRGuitarMan is right - the clean tones are superb. Once I made my own presets, I rarely leave my practice studio and as jerryratpack says, once the GDec is hooked it up to a pair of M-Audio CX-5's and I stand in the sweet spot between the amp and the monitors with a stereo preset on....celestial.
Great amp....

I love my G-DEC 3 Thirty tone and all. There are some very simple things you can do to improve the tone at low volumes, and turned up it sounds great regardless. Especially with the real band backing tracks that loop seamlessly.

The Mustang I was just a lark. I knew the backing tracks were what I was in it for, but wanted to try one for myself. I've been more "into" tone myself. I was horrified at one of my first practice amps - the one named after the arachnid - now THAT was bad tone. If I was still chasing tone in a modeling amp, I'd go for a SCXD. I have had 2 Vox modeling amps, they sound GREAT, but got rid of them both to keep the GDEC. Function is what sold me.

And like I said, the Mustang was a good amp, for instance, I think the user interface is genius, its just not for me.

PS: I have a tube amp when I want excellent tone, but I rarely use it. I practice with the GDEC because its great functionality and not all that bad on tone, and when I play with friends, the GDEC sounds great turned up. Win-win.

IMO if you adjust the parameters for the effects on your GDEC you can get some really great dirt for your amp. I have modified several settings to where they sound just as good as my tube amps. It takes time and aptience. Remember, what you are getting on some of the settings are a starting point. The beauty of the GDEC is that you can adjust the settings, save them on an SD card and you have what you are looking for!
ABS :)
