I know that the GDec is intended to be a one-stop shop – you’ve got a good selection of effects and 100 preset slots to create all the tones you could possibly want. There’s a lot to digest with the huge selection of amps, stompboxes, effects, but try as I might I can’t seem to get that soaring, bluesy, slightly dirty lead sound that stops you in your tracks. I do find the Overdrive included on the GDec to be lacking…….something.

So has anyone had success using overdrive/distortion pedals w/ the GDec 3 30? Which ones? Could probably be its own thread, but overdrive vs. distortion with the GDec? Seems to be a mixed bag, but a lot of forum postings think that distortion is the way to go with solid state amps because there are no tubes. Not sure if that’s really true or not since most overdrive pedals have a gain knob, but just curious as to how people think they’ll play. And I’m looking pretty low cost here – say $125 tops - not going out to spend $300 on a pedal to use with a GDec.

Playing a Lonestar Deluxe HSS strat w/ Texas Special pups and a Pearly Gates in the Bridge.

Hi herz1512, The G-Dec 3 30 has a lot of processing but it's digital and that's why I added a Digitech Bad Monkey Tube Overdrive to get "more meat to the bone" to the sound and it works...I suppose that an Ibanez Tube Screamer would do the same but it's much more $$$ and has less control. Here's my setup:
Us Midified Strat--> Cry Baby-> Bad Monkey-> G-Dec 3 30-> PA (via G-Dec line out)
and the Strat signal (via Roland GK-3 pickup) is also directed to a Roland VG-88 and that config gives me all the guitar sounds I want from acoustic to
blues ...country...rock...metal...and even some great artists songs not forgetting that since all this tech helps, it's all in fingers and heart.
Hope you make your choice.

Cool thanks. It's worth a shot - can get a Bad Monkey on Ebay for $30!

With a Bad Monkey you won't regret it...just read the reviews about this pedal on the web and you'll see. :wink:

Bad Monkey pedal sounds great. Really thickens and warms up the sound. Thanks for the idea.

What presets are you using with the bad monkey ?
I have an OCD , and I am not sure if I ever tried to do that with my G Dec. I thought I did with bad results, but not sure

I know running any effects box in the past, in front of the G Dec only works to some degree on the very clean channel ( Blackface Dry ) etc.

Thanks

playing a HSS strat with Texas Specials in the neck and middle and a SD Pearly Gates in the bridge. I usually keep both of the tone knobs at 5-6 and keep the volume at 7-8 with minor tweaking as needed.

I’ve got the Blues tone lineup on my G Dec and can use the Bad Monkey with pretty much everything. Still experimenting with what really sounds good but I agree with you on using the clean amp models – at least if the gain is up on the Bad Monkey. It sounds better than the Overdrive stompbox on the G Dec IMO. If I’m using a preset that already has a lot of gain and add the Bad Monkey to it there is too much background noise. I personally don’t think the tone sounds bad – just too much background hiss. But if I dial the gain back on the Bad Monkey and use it as more of a boost – I dunno - just like the way it sounds. And it provides a quicker way to adjust the bass and treble then going through the GDec itself.

A good way to see if your pedal improves anything is to take a clean amp model setting and compare the digital G Dec overdrive versus your OCD and see how they sound.

+1 on the Bad Monkey. Works well with my G-DEC3 Thirty, as well as my Vox AD60VTX and Carvin XV110.
