I originally posted this in the wrong forum. I meant to put it in the GDEC3 forum.

I like to run a drum machine through the Aux in jack which allows me to hear both drums and my guitar while playing, but when I try to record on Ableton, all I get is the guitar track. Why isn't the drum being recorded also? How can I set it up so I can get either the drum machine or even the backing tracks, as they don't seem to record either?

I have a small mixing board, but no way to run a USB line to my laptop. There is no USB output on the drum machine either. So how can I record anything but just my guitar?

Loren got me further along, I now can see the signal on the meters but still have no sound output from the headphones. When trying to do the hardware configuration,on the output speakers I am getting an error message, "Unavailable, MS GS Wavetable Synth engaged?". I Googled this message but none of the suggested solutions work for me. I am running Windows Vista on a Dell Inspiron laptop. Most of the answers listed are for XP or Windows 7. Help!

Hey Valcom2,

It sounds like another program is using your audio card. Make sure that all other programs are closed before running Live. This includes any IM apps, or utility apps that launch on startup.

I have nothing else running at all when this is happening, but yes, that is what it is acting like. Funny thing is that if I wait a half hour or so, the little Xs on the output section go away and everything works fine. I have tried rebooting ableton, rebooting the amp, nothing happens. Just clears up when ever it feels like. Once it was only 10 minutes, but is usually closer to 1/2 hour to 45 minutes. Makes no sense to me.

In addition, if I export the audio as a .wav file, I get an error message when I try to play it in Windows Media, or burn it with Roxio but it will play just fine on Yahoo Jukebox (won't burn to a disc though).

WTF? I have Ableton on a desktop as well. Gonna see if I get the same problems by transferring my laptop files over. If anyone has experienced this or if tech support has any suggestions, please chime in.

Hi Valcom2,

Like Loren was suggesting, it sounds like your system is grabbing the audio hardware for some specific task. It may even be something other than a specific application that you launch, etc. It could be system sounds or as Loren suggested, an IM app. You might also try setting up a fresh user account (Admin), and seeing how your system behaves in that account. Please let us know how it is going.

Cheers,

After many, many tries and searching for similar problems on the web,I managed to have a break through. I kept pounding on the hardware configuration path as tech support suggested. Found that I needed to turn things on in the proper sequence, amp on first, then open Ableton. This gave me two choices of sound "systems" to work with. One labeled "IDT High Definition audio CODEC"and the other that popped up when turning things on in the proper order labeled "Dec Audio". the first one is there regardless if the amp is on or not. Speaker/HP and Out have little Xs in them and if you roll the cursor over them it displays "Status Unavailable". The other choices say "Active--Polling (Push). Wiring is guitar to amp input, amp hooked up to computer via USB cable, and run a cable from Headphone Out on the amp to Mic In on the computer (you will probably need some adapter plugs) and add headphones plugged into the jack on the computer.

You now need to unlock the outputs by putting the cursor on the volume symbol (little speaker) in the bottem right corner and right click playback devices. On the box that appears (labeled "sounds") right click each device, make sure it is enabled, Right click on the device and click on the "properties" choice. Another box opens, click on "advanced" and then uncheck the box that says "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device." Now click "OK". Do the same thing for all devices shown. Do this also for Play back devices. This allows applications to share these devices rather than block one app out.

Now go back to Ableton "options--preferences" set Driver type to Asio, then click on "hardware setup". So now set the hardware like this: Dec audio IN (from ASIO input)should be ON, Out should be OFF. Built in system should be ON, Microphone should be OFF, Speaker/HP should be ON, and you use the Muxed in either OFF to record only the guitar or if you set Muxed In to ON, you can now input the backing tracks from the GDEC or a drum box to one Audio input in Ableton while playing the guitar in another Audio in. You can record drums, backing track and guitar all together on one track or record the drums and backing track first, turn Mux to OFF and then record the guitar on another Audio in as a separate track while listening to the backing track and/or drums at the same time. Make sure that the audio track being recorded is set to IN on Ableton and the track being listened to (backing track/drum track) is set to AUTO. You now have a two track recording that you can record over and keep your solo, or delete and re-record, all in real time while listening to the whole mix as you are playing. The backing track can be saved as a separate file for use again.

I can see how this could be expanded even further by using a small mixing board and running the output to the computer MIC In jack and have multiple inputs, plus GDec backing track and either another guitar or keyboard all playing over the same track.
