I use a "Y" cable and run both outputs on my G-DEC to the return on my KB100 Kustom bass amp with a 15" speaker. I get incredible bottom end and nice crisp highs out of the 10" and the tweeter in the G-DEC.

I didn't notise a lot of difference in tone with the back off of the G-DEC compared to the back on.

I just put an Eminance Ragin' Cajan 10'' speaker in mine and this was a significant improvement. In general a much fuller and richer sound that wont distort that much even at much higher volumes than the stock speaker. I tried a 10'' PA type speaker before but it was not as efficient as the stock speaker and it lost some volume. The Ragin Cagin is very efficient and make a world of difference in this application. A 20 minute install.

That is good to know. I have a brand new, in the box 8 ohm JBL D110F, actually i have seven of them and no, they are not for sale. Is there enough room in the cabinet for one of those where I could still put the back on?

How did this affect the sound of the band tracks? While I'm sure the GDEC could benefit from a "real guitar speaker"... I don't want it making the backing tracks sound distorted or woofy, or... whatever. It's always been my understanding modeling amps, especially the GDEC because of the backing tracks, come with full-range (more akin to P.A.) speakers, because that's what the modeling tech is designed around.

The Ragin cagan Has a fairly wide frequency response so it does cover a lot of ground. The backing tracks sound much fuller and with better bass and it is much clearer at a higher volume. It can handle 75 watts so the gdecs 30 watts is not a problem. Check out the gdec original speakers magnet.....its not big at all. Its a good upgrade and it makes the gdec a much better guitar amp too. It will make the gdec heavier because of the much bigger magnet.

Saw that Eminence recommends "The Copperhead" speaker as a replacement speaker for the original G Dec on the GC website. Anyone tried one of those in one of the new models?

"Venemous American tone.
Extremely balanced, vintage tone with a little country honk and a touch of classic blues. Perfect for country, blues, bluegrass, and funk. Ideal for a one, 2, or 4x10" open- or closed-back setup. 75W RMS handling, 150W peak. 8 ohm impedance.

Eminence recommends the Copperhead as a direct replacement speaker in the Fender G-DEC 30, Fender Princeton Recording, and the Behringer V-tone GMX210 combo amplifiers."

I replaced the stock speaker with the Copperhead; it made a huge difference. Far less boomy in the bass department, more articulate and revealing across the tonal spectrum and much louder. Conservatively, it's the equivalent of doubling the amp's power--it has a 99 db SPL response, and appeared to have a flatter response than the Rajin' Cajun, my other choice. As far as messing with the modeling characteristics based on the stock speaker, consider how poor the presets sound that Fender creates for the amp. Also, the disparity between the way the speaker and headphones sound. Trust me, the Copperhead sounds way better than the original $5 (probably less!) Chinese speaker.

However, if you're satisfied with the stock configuration, you can save $80!

In listening to the sound clips of both the Ragin' Cajun and the Copperhead on the Eminence web site, the Ragin' Cajun sounded the best to my ear.

It was a coin toss between the Ragin' Cajun and the Copperhead. The frequency response was slightly flatter with the Copperhead, and for a modeling amp that was a consideration for me. I'm sure I would be happy with either one. As far as the backing tracks, yes they sound better as well. My primary interest was in my own guitar tone, and all guitars (single coil, humbucker and acoustic (!)) sound much improved.

In fairness to Fender, you can't expect them to include a speaker that by itself costs 25% of the selling price of the amp.

Emailed Eminence to get their recommendation - incredibly fast response by the way. EMail string below - my email and then their responses. They recommended either the Beta-10A with the tweeter or the Ragin Cajun if the tweeter is removed.

Does Eminence have a recommended replacement speaker for a Fender GDec 3 Thirty (not the original G Dec)? That’s the Fender modeling amp (somewhat similar to the Mustang) with the 10” speaker and hi-frequency tweeter (I don’t plan on swapping out the tweeter). The amp has an aux-in jack and also plays backing tracks directly from the amp itself, so I’m looking for something that can improve the tone of the guitar but also retains the sound on the backing tracks. I’d appreciate any recommendations that you have.

I recommend our Beta-10A. This should match up well with the stock crossover and it will give you a warm, smooth, more neutral tone with good bass, which should be great to compliment all of the modeling features of your amp.

http://www.eminence.com/speakers/speake ... l=Beta_10A

So you’d recommend a PA speaker rather than a guitar speaker (something like The Copperhead or the Ragin Cajun)? I’m mostly concerned with making the guitar tone sound good – both clean and overdriven – but don’t want the backing tracks to be adversely affected. Also, the tweeter in the G-Dec sucks pretty bad – don’t know if that changes your recommendation at all.

The amp is designed to use a neutral type of speaker. You get tone from the amp modeling. You can certainly use a more traditional guitar speaker, if you want a specific type of tone, but I doubt they will match up well with the tweeter and you're probably going to have early speaker break up. If it were my amp, I would use a Ragin Cajun and eliminate the tweeter. Ragin Cajun has great balance and is very versatile.

HMM... this thread gets more & more interesting with every post!!

I just got my GDEC, so I won't be swapping any speaker until I'm good & familiar with it first, but I have been known to swap speakers in my "real" guitar amps, so this thread is very very interesting...

Great thread!

So I opted for the Ragin Cajun. Easy enough to take the back off of the amp, unhook the speaker and take the speaker off. You'd think it would be as easy as sliding the connectors from the wire onto the connectors on the speaker. But one of the wire connectors on the wire from the amp is a different size and won't slide onto the speaker. Looking at the factory speaker, one of the connectors on the speaker is smaller so it does fit the connector on the wire. But on the Ragin Cajun both of the connectors are the same size, the bigger size, so they don't fit with the connectors on the wire.

For those of you that switched out the speaker, did you run into this? What do I do?

In those cases, I solder. I don't bother trying to hunt down the correct connectors. Cut the connectors off, strip the ends of the wires, and solder them directly to the speaker.

You're warranty is probably already void anyway. :)

In a pinch, if you don't have a solder gun, do the same thing, except strip enuff of the wire ends to go thru & wrap around the speaker tabs. Wrap them as tightly as you can, then use a couple of small pieces of tin foil, crimped on with your fingers, to hold them in place, until you can solder or find the proper size connectors.
