I was thinking about getting a Mustang, specifically one of the larger models. However I play mainly electronic stuff, and I need a fairly light and portable rig. Dragging around a 1x12" 100 Watt combo might not work out for me.

The G-DECs are kind of neat, I like that they have SUNN models.

How much low end do they have? I notice they have a woofer/tweeter combo. I would imagine that would mean they'd have more low end than the average 10" speaker, though probably doesn't get as loud. Would it hang with a drummer? It's not a big deal if it doesn't, I'm going to be running it into a mixer most likely.

How does it stack up to the Mustang tone wise?

What I like about my Gdec is the line out. With that the output is unlimited. Sending it out to the PA or a powered speaker gives you all the low end you need. The 10" and tweater in my opinion is great for practice and home use, but for gigging, I recommend the powered speaker or PA.

Hi Electric Mistress,

I think that you could use a Fender Mustang II for live work. But how it would stack up against a drummer would probably depend upon the playing situation, the style of music, and how hard the drummer was hitting, etc.

As JoeR says, you may be better off going with a Fender G-DEC 3 Thirty instead. You would get the a great variety of amp models, and the added bonus of the stereo line outs on board. In regard to low end, the Fender Mustang II and the Fender G-DEC 3 Thirty will put out a solid amount of low end for their size and power. But in the end, you may find that the line outs will save the day in certain live situations.

In terms of the amp modeling of one vs. another, they are both excellent. And they both vary, as they each have somewhat different amp modeling. But in this regard you should be able to find the tones you are looking for on either.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.

Best Regards,

Thank you - it is great to get some official advice from Fender!

It's still a tough call to make. What I really like about the G-Dec is the inclusion of the Sunn models. There are probably no plans yet Is there any chance the Mustangs may have this, or any new amp model in the future? Is it actually possible to add new models to the Mustang if you wanted to?

Thanks.

Unfortunately, there's no way to add more amp models. Perhaps this will change with future versions, but it is unlikely.

Thanks for being honest about the amp models. Is it due to a limitation in storage on the amp?

Will future versions of the G-Dec firmware add the "Bias" and "Sag" controls then? That would be quite nice.

I have some experience here. I ran my GDEC 3 thirty into the PA at a gig in SC. It did fine but I wanted more volume on stage to supplement the lack of monitors. I then made a total switch and quit using the GDEC 3 and went all tube amp, pedal board - total old school and spent a lot of cash in the process. I now have two powered PA speakers that the GDEC 3 runs into and it sounds amazing. I'm also running my GDEC 3 into my Kustom Coupe 36 watt tube amp fx loop and believe it or not the sounds coming out of the tube amp are very sweet! Currently I'm running out of the earphone jack into the fx loop, it seems to sound better to me that way. All this to say, I have found I can get many more tones/sounds out of my GDEC 3 than I can out of my boutique pedal board. I'm sure some purists will scoff but I love being able to tailer my sound for each song ahead of time, create presets in the order of our set lists and go. I have a volume pedal between the GDEC 3 and the amp and it's plenty loud when needed. I will be running this set up in two weeks at another show and we will see what we get. I think I will have to do less "pedal dancing" and get to do more playing.

I own the old G-DEC amps and two of the new G-DEC 3 Thirty amps. I also own a Mustang II and a Mustang V half-stack. I have used the G-DECs for years when gigging out, running them L & R into the PA system and the sound has always been awesome. I also use the G-DECs for backing tracks behind my partner and me and the results have been great. I usually have two of the G-DEC 3 Thirty amps on stage - backing tracks through one and guitar through the other.

I have also used the Mustang II on stage, usually running an A-B-Y box from my guitar to an Acoustasonic Jr amp and to the Mustang. This gives me a quick change from acoustic sounds to overdriven sounds. It's the best of both worlds and I love these small amps!

I have the original G-Dec(currently in pieces) that I played for a good 5 years in key west going from sloppy joes to margaritaville and everywhere in between. just before it died I bought the G-dec 3 and a Mustang I & II. For doing doubles and triple gigs running across an island full of drunk people, a 50 watt combo amp with pedal board killed me. Not only did the G-Dec save my back, but has adapted itself into my show with the phrase looper control from the foot switch. I'll have that rig and my buddy will play a Zendrum and we goto town.
I also run a few jams around town and needed a small but affordable second amp to have for that. I bought the Mustang I and used it to great success but found that I needed more power. A friend was interested in the amp(from using it at jam nite) and offered to buy it so that and another $100 allowed me to get the Mustang II. No looping features but great for small band gigs and enough power so that the bass player can hear me over the drummer. Another surprising thing is how well this amp works with pedals. I'm still learning the amp and the software.
Using any of this for performing has posed no issue and yeilded great results. although there are things that you will have to work out with regard to seting up presets and using the direct line/headphone out of either of these amps if you choose to use this in this fashion. Monitors are your friend at that point so you'll have to take charge of your sound or have a sound man you trust or take care of your own monitors ala mixer and powered speaker.
