I finally managed to make a decent backing track on Ableton but have no idea how to save it back to the SD card so GDEC can use it. How do you save an Ableton file as a .wav? Right now all I can see is a .ALS folder.

Export. I found it. I hate the way user manuals are written. They do not always follow a logical sequence and they always assume you know stuff, that I don't. Anyway, problem solved.

Use the Export Audio/Video function in the File menu. That will "bounce down" all of your audio tracks into a stereo file.
