I wanted to get this under it's own thread rather than buried in someone else's post

I have been beating my head against a wall trying to get Ableton to work. I read the installation blurp from this site, but there is apparently a lot left out and assumed the operator knows the details. Obviously I don't.

After 4 attempts just to load the software, uninstalling and re-installing on the 5th attempt I got it loaded and authorized. Since that time (a week ago) I still cannot get a sound out of the software and the "meters" on the "mixboard" do not even register an input.

I have gone to the Ableton help people, gone through the tutorials and no one can provide enough information to make any progress. One e-mail from Ableton explained using the "hardware configuration" button to activate the GDEC as a source (why is this not addressed in ANY help or tutorial?) and at that point I was getting meter movement when I strummed the guitar, but no sound out. The Ableton guy suggested I needed to configure input/output on the GDEC

I went to utilities menu and scrolled to "USB device", hit enter and then everything went crazy. I got 8 different Install Wizards and after that installation now the hardware config will not allow the GDEC (USB device in the pulldown) to stay activated. In fact when I put the cursor over the device to activate it, I get one of those little indicator bubbles that says, I swear:

"Status: Beyond logic!
Audio driver too old/too new?
Computers hate you!"

Seriously? I have to have hit some impossible logic limit the programmer figured no one would ever reach. I just want to record rhythm tracks off my guitar and save them as backing tracks on the GDEC. The Ableton people don't know anything about GDEC so they are pretty much worthless. I searched the forums for Ableton problems and find very few issues, mostly license stuff.

Is there a time after 5:00 EST that someone could walk me through the installation if I call your support number or does anyone else know how to fix this?

Hey Valcom2,

Have you looked at this KB article?
http://fender.com/support/article.php?kb_id=33

The second tutorial video titled "Ableton Live Lite 8 Fender Edition: Audio Interface Setup (PC)" explains the setup EXACTLY the way it's supposed to go. If you follow these instructions and still can't get any sound then there is something else going on with your system.

Have you tried to contact us directly by phone? We are available until 5pm Arizona time which would be 8pm EST.

Ableton Live, like most professional DAW's is pretty deep. If things aren't going smoothly there could be many reasons. There are often many variables when dealing with computers and audio-related issues. Sometimes phone support is the best option.

Loren

Apparently I do not have the software to see the video. I did go thru the instruction you just posted and it goes wrong where it says to open "hardware configuration" I see no control panel. This is where I get the message I quoted in my original post, "Status: Beyond logic!" and "Computers hate you!!

I just finished searching You Tube for videos regarding Ableton set up, but there is nothing that includes the GDEC. I am going to uninstall and then reinstall for the 6th time, if for no other reason than to get rid of the batch of drivers that were loaded. I was further along (had signal input) before that happened.

I will call in tonite. I do think it would be much easier than using this message board so I can provide the program responses in real time. Thank you for sticking with me.

It sounds to me like you have spyware messing with your computer! Boot into Safe Mode with Networking (F8 at splash screen after turning on), and download M-Bam & Spybot, update & run while still in Safe Mode.

After doing that, try booting normally and things should work. :)

The tipoff is the "Computers hate you" statement. There's no real computer software that would return that as a message if there's a real problem.

I use Google (or any search engine) to find where to download those programs. They are both free! Don't pay for them.

Just wanted to publicly thank Alan (I think that was his name) at the Fender call in line for spending an hour or more with me to correct this problem and get things working. I ended up re-downloading the ASIO driver, went through the setup routine with Alan's help and everything worked the way it was supposed to. And all with no strange accent to decipher.

Didn't think about spyware for the strange message (which does not appear anymore). I will take your suggestion and do that anyway. The Fender help people have been wonderful. Let them help you if you have questions or problems. Couldn't ask for better reaction and makes me feel very good about my Fender product.

+1 on Customer Support help!

On spyware issues, I manage a RadioShack, and one of my most lucrative services I offer is "fixing" customers' computers when they catch viruses/spyware. Most are not aware that even with good Anti-Virus protection, they can still get spyware invasions that can hijack their computer to unwanted websites, etc. I offer the previous information to all my customers, but if they don't feel comfortable doing it themselves, I charge $50 to do it for them. I also leave the programs on their computer so they can fix it themselves if it reoccurs (which it shouldn't, IF they follow my directions to update and run the software on a weekly basis). :P

Hopefully, this tip can help everyone here!
Bob

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your kind words. I'm very glad that you are up and running with Live Lite Fender Edition. In regard to that strange message you were reporting, we have done some research, and Loren (here in the TSL) discovered that the message is generated by the ASIO driver itself in certain circumstances. You normally will not see it. But it can appear. It is unimportant, and can be ignored once you have your ASIO driver set up correctly.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.

Best Regards,

Can you please tell us what exactly did you set-up, Ableton, asio, windows sound properties? I'm having the same sound issues. With mustang plugged in, I can see VUmeters jumping but no sound coming out, either from MIDI tracks or guitar.

No Problem. There were actually two separate problems. 1. The Asio driver did not install correctly. I re-installed and was able to get further along than before. 2. I did not have the correct output path enabled. You have to find the hardware setup button and actually highlight the output path by clicking on it. This was key because teh instructions never actually point out that you need to click on teh driver set up displayed to activate it. Also make sure you have the record enabled in your session screen (that one thru me for a while) and have the output set to ext out. Those were my mistakes, but the driver issue really was the majority of the problem. Don't be afraid to call the help desk. The guys are great to work with and have the patience of Job for those of us who may be less computer savvy than others. If my suggestions don't help, they can save you a lot of time and lost patince.

thank you very much valcom,
still no luck...
I reinstalled ASIO, but the problem is the same. There's a yellow circle and cross symbol in ASIO settings window next to my audio card (SoundMAX integrated digital HD audio), the message on mouseover is:
Status: beyond logic!
-> Disable system sounds in control panel (?)
-> deactivate unused inputs and outputs
-> audio drivers too old/too new (well, I have latest drivers for this old card so both might be true :))
-> computers hate you (sweet)

everything else should be ok. Maybe its just that my soundcard doesn't like ASIO driver...

You are getting the same error messages I got. The message is coming from the ASIO software (see higher up in thread from help desk). I had to download ASIO 4 times before it worked correctly. I also remember now that there is an order that you need to go in, either have the amp plugged in and running then initiate Ableton or the opposite, have Ableton up and running, output path selected (deactivate any other output path) then turn on the amp. I am pretty sure it is the latter. Nothing in the tutorials or the instructions indicates that the order you do these things in is important, but it was, even after I got the ASIO loaded correctly. May not mean anything, but I did NOT have Fender Fuse up while running Ableton.

If nothing else, call the Fender help desk and have them walk you through getting everythnig started step by step and write down the order in which you do it. I bet it turns out to be a minor detail.

Thanks again, but I still nothing. When I turn mustang on in the ASIO control panel the evil yellow icon :)shows up next to my internal card and I don't get any output.
I found that other people have problems with this SoundMAX integrated digital HD audio on a laptop ASIO in general. I installed universal asio drivers, ASIO4ALL, it has more options, but I get the same error when switching mustang on.
Funny thing is that on this card under Linux with low-latency audio driver (jack) everything works fine, I get 8ms latency and no other problems except that Ableton doesn't work under Linux.
Nevermind, I should get a new laptop anyway :)
