... I can only hear backing tracks (via aux in and the presets) and my own loops through headphones. Presumably something to do with the headphones socket not disengaging when the plug is pulled out.

Brilliant!!! Faulty after only two weeks.

My only option is to take it back to the shop - and in spite of having come round to singing the G-Dec's praises, this is the final straw.

I'm buying an amp (Blackstar HT-5), a looper with MP3/USB in (Digitech Jamman) and an effects pedal (Line 6 M13) - it'll cost me more, but it will be a darn sight better than the G-Dec! :?

PS. I might calm down by morning and change my mind... but you don't need this sort of thing, do you?

If you scan back through earlier posts, you will see that your problem has been brought up before. Fender should be aware of the headphone jack problem. You might call customer service and alert them to your situation and see if they can expidite a fix for you. I have a new G Dec 3 and I personally do not intend to plug a headphone into my amp until the situation is addressed by fender.

Thanks jaydkay.

No solutions on that thread, but I've posted my thoughts, which are that there is obviously a problem with a cheapo jack socket here. Fender should do a product recall - authorise dealers, under warranty, to upgrade the headphones jack to a specification set out by Fender.

The annoying thing is, I still like this thing... it's like it's going through that unruly, but lovable child phase.

Hey VerySlowHand,

I'm sorry you're having this issue. We've seen this issue before and in each case we've taken the proper steps to get it resolved. We realize there are a number of amps in circulation that are affected by this problem. Your amp comes with a 5 year warranty on the hardware. If you give us a call we can get this issue resolved for you.

Loren,

Just for information sake, what is Fender doing on the fix you mentioned? Are you replacing the socket with the exact item that seems to be causing the problem, or are you upgrading the socket to one of higher quality?

I have not opened up my amp, but the headphone socket seems to be a 1/8 plastic device integrated into the usb/sd disk unit. I just replaced my G Dec 30 (I still have it) with this newer amp. On the G Dec 30 the headphone jack seems to be a metal 1/4 inch socket of a stronger design. In all the years I have had the original amp the headphone jack has been flawless (in fact the entire amp has been).

Hi Loren,

Thanks for the offer of assistance, but like jakdkay asks, why can't you just tell us what you are doing about this specific problem? You say you are taking steps to resolve it... tell us what steps!

Asking me to give you a call, to resolve what is obviously a warranty issue, sounds both helpful and evasive at the same time. Sorry to put it to you like this, but I'm just giving you my impression as a customer.

Since it's a fault and not a query, I'll take it to my dealer this morning and ask them to give you a call... or maybe you ring them... Da***ns, Chester.

Be reassured that I'm only bothering with this Forum because I like the new G-Dec - compared to the alternatives - and think it's worth persevering with.

So my dealer has sent the amp to Fender UK for a repair or replacement. I have no amp in the meantime. I asked for a replacement or a loan amp from the dealer, but didn't get either. It's like: "We can't do anything, it's up to Fender." Would you get the same response in the US?

Edit: In case anyone reading these threads think I've got a total downer on the G-Dec, I just want to say that (having calmed down a bit) I have no reservations about the sound (with phones or otherwise) from the G-Dec - in terms of amp models, effects and their tweak-ability, and when you play with the backing tracks you really feel like you're part of the mix. :D

Response to amp failures in the U.S. generally depends on three things: what your dealer has in stock, what Fender says when your dealer calls them and finally, (good, bad or otherwise) how good a customer you are.

I haven't had any hardware issues with my new 3 Thirty amps, but I had a number of problems with the old G-DEC 30s, most of them not hardware related. But every time I took a G-DEC back to my local Guitar Center, the boys there would call Fender and Fender would say, give him another amp and send the broken down one back to us. In and out, with no problem, on two separate occasions.

That said, when I first got my two 3 Thirty amps I was less than thrilled to see what Fender had done with the headphone jack, not too thrilled to see the Ext Speaker Out had been deleted, too. It seems that as amps like this evolve there are always two steps forward, one step back. I haven't used the headphone jacks on mine and don't intend to tempt fate by doing so.

Miami Mike,

I have not had a problem with the headphone jack-BUT I sure do not want one. I posted a question to Fender about modifying the amp by wiring in a stereo plug on the back of the amp and got the reply that my warranty would be voided if I did that.

I posted a workaround for the headphone jack by using the line out jacks on the back of the amp. Warranty is not affected due to there being no alteration of the amp itself. It is really working great for me.

I have since taken the output from the Y adapter (which is plugged into the amps line outs) to a switch box. One out from the switch box goes to the small personal amp and headphones and another out goes to my 130 watt Peavey (its good that I live rural because this really fills up the house). There is nothing to do except turn the volume control down to 1 and put on the headphones or in the second case fire up the Peavey.

So as far as I am concerned the plastic headphone jack on the front of the amp is a non feature and will not be used. My setup is probably easier to work with anyway.

I too have noted Fender's silence on this topic. They told me if I had a problem that they would take care of it. That seems to be their stance on the topic. There have been enough posts on this forum for me to believe that there is an issue with the jack. Not everyone that buys an amp will post on this forum so Fender is the only one that has a handle on the scope of this amp componnent.

Loren:

There is nothing wrong with my G-Dec 3 but I was wondering about how much it would cost to have the repair done if I did have these problems with my headphone jack. Unfortunately for me, I immediately lost the sales receipt after I bought the amp (dumb huh). The manager at Birmingham Alabama's Guitar Center will not print me another copy so if I do have a warranty issue it will up to me to foot the bill. I do use my headphones with the amp almost every night so I am curious about how much it would cost to fix the problem if it did arise.

Thanks in advance Loren

True Blue,

I am pretty much in the same boat. I am using the line out jacks on the back of the amp with my headphones and it is working well. I posted it on the forum: "Work Around for Headphone Jack"

jaydkay:

Thanks for the suggestion. I had already seen your previous post and had played around with the line outs myself. I do have a Frontman 25R on order (Since April/May) that I intend to use at night, hopefully that will come soon although I think I will need a couple of pedals to go with it. I am curious about the average cost of the headphone jack repair on a G-Dec 3 though....

That's the problem with being the first kids on the block to have the latest toy. Unfortunately you end up being the guinea pig as well.
I haven't tried the phone jack yet. although I'm tempted to just to see if I've got one of the defective ones. If we all send them back for warranty - those of us who still have our receipts at any rate - maybe it will force the company to make the change more quickly.
The inconvenience of not having an amp for a while might be worth sending a message to a company who, apparently, doesn't care about it's customer's concerns.
Fender's non-response speaks volumes. Sad.
